What happened to the ID Card feature that was supposed to be rolled out in iOS 15. I was really looking forward to this feature. Even if not recognized in all states, I still think it would be useful to be able to add it.

No, you never hand your phone over (this is coming from a cop). This service will not replace your ID for 99% of things your ID is needed for. Per the press release they initially sent out, this is aimed at TSA and flying. I think it eventually may be spread out more but it requires a device to read your ID, just like ApplePay wirelessly. At the beginning, only TSA will be able to read them. Most police agencies will not be able to afford the technology needed to interface with their systems.

This will not be a physical copy of your license on your phone. This will be digital only with a scanner type device. You will not be able to get rid of your physical ID.

That makes sense. I don't have the star on mine so it wouldn't work with the TSA either. I wouldn't mind having a US passport as a QC code on my phone.

Yes, the passport makes more sense to me but I think the problem with that is that most places overseas would not accept it so that's why they went with state ID's instead. I think it definitely has some potential but I just don't see it currently taking off (flight pun intended). Most people have their boarding pass on their phone so will you have to switch between your ID, then your boarding pass when at TSA? This will actually slow down the process instead of speed it up. Will the reader allow you to show your boarding pass while automatically reading the ID from the background of your phone? If so, this creates a privacy issue as your phone could be possibly read without your knowledge by a bad actor with a device that can read it. There are a lot of unknowns.

Every state has to handle this independently.

Duh. But with banks all lining up to offer Apple Pay via the same basic mechanism, and consumer demand, I see this happening pretty easily and relatively quickly... once Arizona and Georgia do it and prove the concept, the other states will begin to line up... with all of the various governmental requirements from each state, there could be a good deal of "weeds" for Apple to wade through - but having a national (international?) standard should help that a lot.

I am in Georgia. iOS 15 just installed. There is no way to add a DL to the Wallet. Unless it is really hidden, there is no way to do it.

There is no + icon.

It says on Apple’s website that it will launch in late 2021. So maybe 15.1 or 15.2

Yep. Nothing changed. No Digital Car Key, ID Card, nothing......... just transit cards and credit/debit cards.

Sadly, this is probably this most important thing for me. But, as usual, Apple promises and then does not deliver on time.

Apple never promised it upon release of iOS 15. Apple can't do anything without the state of Georgia being ready.

Likewise, I'm in Arizona... but I don't thing anything has been 'released' yet from the states' perspectives... Apple will make it available to the device, the the state has to do the work first... sort of like Apple Pay - Apple developed the specs and set up the platform, but the individual banks had to implement it within their systems before thei DB/CC cards were active.

I’m in GA too. Once it’s active with the state, Apple will flip a switch on their side and we’ll add it with that plus button shown. For other IDs or for a car that supports it, you need to register with the auto manufacturer first in their app.

Just wondering...

So I get pulled over in my car and the cop wants to see my license. Do I hand over my (possibly unlocked) phone to them?
My guess is that you can bring it up without the password, like with Apple Wallet, or an airline ticket.

Let’s see if the UK bother to participate in this

The DVLA said they are looking to implement it in the next few years so it's coming. The UK's DVLA and Gov UK digital side of things is actually pretty good.

My dealings with the DMV including a state who's DMV is among the first to implement the digital drivers license is that they are horrible, archaic, and barely fit for purpose. My experience with the UK's DVLA is they are quick, simple, easy, and online.

I live in Georgia and do not have the option to load my driver's license. I thought people were already doing that in the IOS 15 betas?
