At the risk of stating the obvious, it's easier to market one device, with a name people can remember (yes, 'iPhone' will do nicely...) rather than a string of meaningless letters (like most other phone manufacturers). I hope Apple produce a small suite of models, at some point, with and without particular features to hit a range of price points... but I don't understand why a company like Nokia always seems to have a couple of dozen models to choose from. Too much choice can be counter-productive... well, it is for me. Give me a choice between iPhone, iPhone Basic and iPhone Luxury, and I'll make a considered choice. Give me too many choices... and all I get is a headache. Of course, being in UK, all this is hyperthetical. ;)

Can't EVEN compare to Razrs/iPods

You're forgetting very important details...

Razrs were available on different networks within a few months. The iPhone is exclusive to Apple, a point that will cripple growth quite a bit as competition comes out with other phones.

iPods are not tied to one carrier and do not require a subscription fee, credit check, contract or other financially binding element to use them.

It's impossible to make a comparison.

I don't know why people keep overlooking those details. The iPhone will probably be the highest/quickest selling Apple-branded, carrier-locked device sold in the US for the ATT network. In other words, they are in a category of their own and are setting the bar. There are too many elements that set them apart from comparison to other devices, Apple branded or mobile.

;)

I am THNINKING you meant ATT not Apple. If so, I agree. If not, I wuld point out that exclusive to ATT will hurt it compared to RAZR.

The flip side is if something becomes "the craze" like RAZR did with teens, it may not matter much- if you HAVE to have it to be cool, not much will matter. But I think the price, and lack of discounting will keep that from happening any time soon.

I doubt we will see discounting anytime soon (other from eBayers who need to get some money out of their attempts at scalping!). That is the benefit of exclusivity. But that is a two-edged sword, and only time will tell if it was smart or held back sales.
