Set my B&W G4 back up and have it in the prime spot in my office (second desk) to log HAM radio contacts, and use the system to reference various PDF documents I have for frequencies, and modes for the radios.

I actually store quite a few older Keynote videos on this computer too. With the modern keynotes lacking some of the charm Jobs brought, I like to load them up and rewatch. With a 1080P monitor attached, this G4 enhanced B&W is actually enjoyable to do light browsing / reading old Mac sites, and rewatch old keynotes. I keep wanting to keep it online as a server, however I have a 12 core cMP that is always on, so I just boot this when I want to serve my older (Classic) mac computers files / applications on my local LAN.

While it is quite slow for daily use on the web, I am amazed how well it loads this forum software and browses many of the medium / low intensity sites using Ten Four Fox.

Hello
wget installed successfully on the iMac G5 running 10.4.11. (and it works)
Wow that's cool! I will try it out tomorrow. Actually I just found an iSight G5 to buy and maybe do some of the work myself.G5 tower is too much for me in terms of cost and size, although I could really use a space heater right now ;)

I have made a meta-package, but I am not quite sure how to use it as of yet.
Oh yeah it totally works! The package installs as any other Mac installer. Then you just run /opt/local/bin/wget from the terminal (or export /opt/local/bin to your PATH variable so you can just type wget in any directory).

It seems it also installs some other stuff excluding libraries. So compiling a list of useful stuff and putting it into one package is a good idea.

Sorry for the slow reply. Thank you for trying it out for me and explaining how to use the installed port. I think the other stuff included in the mpkg are dependencies for wget. Please let me know if there is anything else I can try to make into a package until you get the iMac G5 maybe? They are great, although my Quicksilver makes an even more effective space heater which is perfect for hot summer!

If you can leave one of your machines running 10.4, you can try compiling some recent versions of useful terminal utilities using MacPorts and share the binaries.
So many times I had to pull up TenFourFox just to download something, because none of the wget binaries available online that run on Tiger support TLS-secured HTTPS.
I tried compiling it on a Powerbook and I left it running for 2 days on 100% CPU and it wasn't even done with GCC, so until I get a desktop PowerPC Mac I would greatly appreciate if you do that :)

I am pretty sure wget should build for 10.4, and if it does not, please open a ticket on Trac: https://trac.macports.org
10.4.11 should be pain-free in fact, as long as you stick to unmodified portfiles.

GCC is a pain to build on G4, and with 10.4.x you will need to build apple-gcc42 first in order to build gcc7, but you do it just once.

If you get G5, it is probably a better idea to stay on 10.5.8. Leopard is substantially better supported in Macports and the latest compilers build on it. (ppc64 is largely broken, as of now, so stay with ppc32 in Macports.)

Yeah, maybe over a winter when it's -20C outside. I want my PowerBook to last. Or, now I have a friend to ask to build it for me :)

It is true, although I really like the versatility and snappiness of Tiger especially on G4 and that's why I'm interested more to develop on it.

Hi,

FYI DevolutionX for Mac OS X is here...

...plus a ton of other ports for OS X.
Since this is a PPC thread you should know there is no PPC port on there. However I have since discovered there is an unofficial port uploaded on the garden, and it works on 10.5 in my testing (but doesn't seem to work in 10.4)

I was thinking about using my iMac G4 to host my website. Anyone have experience with that kind of thing?

True, but why don't you simply download the official version of Diablo that works with Mac OS X then from Macintosh Garden? DevolutionX is a way for newer machines that can't run the original version to run Diablo.

Good to hear there is a version on Mac Garden that supports PPC though, great news!!

Also, for anyone interested, on https://macsourceports.com/ there ARE some PPC ports on that page, you have to look at each individual game to see which are though.

:)

Sticking with the theme of this post, I STILL use my PPC Mac to download audiobooks from my library and listen to them at home using Overdrive Media Console here...

This is something that no longer works on my Mac OS Catalina or later Macs. The cool thing is the files are saved in a simple .mp3 format on your hard drive so you can use them with anything.

:)

I understand you :) It is +36 C here, and my G5 is running quite hot – in fact, building gcc12, twice. (I would not do it on Quad without a/c.)

P. S. I am back to my PPC machines, evidently, so can participate again in native development.
