If 4.0 has a user interface "refreshment" what are possibilities?

It would be nice if apple put something in the stock 4.0 to customize the lock/homescreen a bit better but meh, if not I'll just do that and more when the phone can be jailbroken.
I've thought that too in the past, and I'd honestly be surprised if they didn't do it that way if they ever add home screen UI elements. Something like swipe down for widgets or notifications and swipe down for multi-tasking, etc.
I will also be really disappointed if they do. It is clunky because it makes it feel like an after thought patch-job. Spotlight is out-of-place as it is - sliding across rows of app icons suddenly to a small bar along the top and a keyboard pops up. It's like they went, "Hrm, we've got this universal search, but where should be put it? As a new, native app? No... Oh, I got it! How about like another home screen, but instead of a grid of icons, it will look and function completely differently?! YEAH! *Jumps up and high-fives*"
I'm not worried though, you know it's just gonna be the wallpaper on the homescreen anyways.
I don't understand the appeal of this. The homescreen looks so cluttered with almost any picture you put back there. I'd say it really only works with texture or something extremely simple.
Personally I like the "cluster" idea that was mentioned in another thread. If I could remember who said it I'd give props but I can't so I'll just say credit where credit is due. Anyway, the home screen would be a zoomed out view of several clusters of apps with the label (category) underneath. Tap the cluster and you zoom in to a scrollable page of those apps.
Neat idea, but highly unlikely.
Sounds just like what they did with photos on the iPad. Just stack app icons and crooked angles, and when you click tap on it it expands to it's own homescreen.
I'd actually prefer small stacks where touching the stacked icon makes a short list of icons fly out over the underlying UI and you'd drag your finger to whichever app you want. It would be one motion - touch, drag, and release.

Why would you want to use a some picture hidden underneath 20 icons. You would barely see 30% of the picture in bits and pieces. Plus, I've seen lots of jailbroken phones...no wonder Apple doesn't want people to screw up their simple/powerful UI.

tbh though, the only reason it looks cluttered is because the icons are so big. look at android, that can look great, but that's because the icons are smaller, the text is easy to read against any background, and the icons can be laid out however you want rather than them snapping to how apple wants you to lay it out.

I think apple prefers a simple closed environment that basically prevents the user from customizing elements of the UI, this seems to include the wall paper and such. While there are negatives associated with this, the advantage is a simple yet powerful UI that is the same for everyone.
With that said, I don't envision apple making any major changes to the UI OR opening up the OS to allow us any more control then what we already have, i.e., we may not get wallpaper, just a black background.

To be honest, I like it, sans the bubble background, make it black.
However, back on topic. User refinements are in my views, the ironing out of the constant bugs that plague the OS, the simplification of certain things.
Small things that makes the OS snappier, or leaner are user refinements. Remember, the lighter and bug free the OS is, the less RAM it will "Oh nom, nom, nom" and faster our iStuff will be.

That looks nice IMO, but some people go overboard and make their homescreens look stupid.
Not enough contrast for me. The icons and some of the names get easily lost in that colorful background. Too busy. I do not retract my previous statement.

Really though, I think it looks fine (and it's my device, so my oppinion is what matters *shock! horror!*), especially on the iPhone screen with it's black border which improves it. it's the choice part that people would like to see. I'm not saying everyones phone should look like mine. And I have no issues with distinguishing icons or text, but hey, I don't have any eye sight issues so maybe that's the difference? Or your looking at it on a high res screen that makes it look smaller? I don't know, I don't care. Either way, to me plain black with goofy looking grey dock looks hidious.
I never said it was fact. I said that it looks stupid. You obviously have different tastes than me. You like the cluttered low contrast look and I like simple.
Yes, it's your device and YOU have to use it... that doesn't mean I have to agree with what you like to look at.
Lemme change my statement then. "I think it looks stupid". The icons aren't bad but that background is way too busy to have similar colored icons on top of it. You need more contrast between the background and the icons to make the icons look clearer.
I'm not sure what they taught you in graphic design school, but that home screen looks retarded.
