MKBHD explains in this video line of my thinking as to why - the new iPad Pro should have something more than just an M1. Simply put, if it still only has an M1, its all to close to the iPadAir, and seems to not be sucha a good value overall.

So, I do expect, Apple, being a master of product categories, to do something to the Pro, to further difirentiate it to the iPad Air. M1 Pro / M2Pro comes to mind, being a perfect fit, category wise. Wonder if they could do some Apple magic about the thermals… ? ? If that really is impossible, than, I wonder what else? Air seems to be closing in to the Pro

I could see them putting M2 pro in devices like the 24" iMac or Mac mini eventually but those chips need cooling so iPads will just go to M2 regular with the pro getting it first and the Air a year later most likely.

I could also see them moving the base iPad up to the most recent A chip from now on, similar to what they're doing with the iPhone SE
This seems reasonable

The expected upcoming M2 is the logical option.

Yeah M1 Pro won’t come to the iPP, the battery life would be shocking to say the least.

What will happen from this point forward in terms of chips is the Pro will get M2, in about 18 months the Air will get M2, not long after that the Pro will get M3 etc…

The Air will always get the most recent chip 9-12 months after the Pro line up gets it, Apple probably think that the better speakers, slightly larger screen, 120hz, Face ID and better camera/speaker set up justifies the extra $200 price difference between the Air and Pro… whether the consumer believes it is each to their own though

There is no point to putting an M1-Pro in the iPad. It would sacrifice battery life and would throttle quickly thus rendering any performance benefits nonexistent, in fact it would probably be slower than the regular M1 when doing the things you might want an M1-Pro for. The next upgrade is the base M2.

Maybe they will just extend the current iPad Pro cycle , instead of 18 months , it will be 24 months . Or maybe they will keep the same cycle but stay with M1 chip, add mini led to 11 . As for the 12, maybe 10gb of ram for default? . Keep it simple so they can focus more on improving iPadOS , desktop mode ? Dual boot? MacOS virtual?

I reckon that the next IPP 11, will get the MacBook Pro screens i.e 120 Mhz Mini LED with absolutely minimal bezels and notch. This will in turn increase the screen size to maybe 11.5“, maybe even 12”, with the current 12.9” model following suit. They will then leave the ipad Air to cover the 11” screen size.

I doubt it. The iPad needs uniform bezels so you can hold it in any orientation. A notch wouldn't work on the iPad.

I could be wrong though I guess we'll see.

I think that they need to find a way to improve the battery life of the iPad now and better utilize iPadOS. My M1 MBA has so much better battery life that it’s almost always what I prefer if I am not using my phone.

Yeah I second this, they really need to bring something big to iPadOS this year otherwise they will really be falling behind software wise with their iPad line up and it’s such a shame.

I currently have the mini 6 and 12.9 Pro and for what iPadOS can currently do, I pretty much always want to pick up my mini over my Pro, which is really frustrating!

I really want to like the larger sized iPad but it’s just so much easier to jump on my iMac to get my work done… if Apple don’t bring something this year I may be tempted to sell my iPP and get the current or upcoming MacBook Air… not 100% sure what to do yet though…

Yeah it’s why I decided to get the new MacBook Pro. It does what I need a laptop to do

I still love my 12.9 pro and use it daily but at this point it’s purely just a media device that I use for YouTube, sports etc. perfect size for my exercise bike stand to watch stuff while working out

Yeah I have just clocked the base MacBook Pro, £1899… if you get it on buy now pay later, they give you 20% back within a few weeks which is credited off your BNPL account… so it’s £1520… it’s just that it’s a bit over powered for what I need, so not sure whether to take the plunge on that or wait for the air…

I don't think Apple needs to do anything special to sell the pro. Miniled will make the difference and M2 will put it above M1 even if the speed difference doesn't matter. As simple as that. Many people are waiting miniled to upgrade the 11 pro, most won't even mind the price increase. On the contrary, a M2 mini led pro will sell more at $900 than a M2 11 pro without Miniled at $800.

I went for the 16 inch base model. I just wanted the bigger size to be fair. For my work it will do nicely and last me a long time I would hope. I’ve got the option to trade it on after 3 years or keep it after 4. So will see

Probably an M2 but not for another 6-12 months.

The Air vs. Pro has a similar relationship to the iPhone vs. iPhone Pro in my opinion. Not really much variation, but they don’t update the air and pro at the same time so at least the pro gets a better processor earlier than the Air. But there is a good overlap where both devices are very similar.
