HP mini 1000 XP Series. I actually considered selling my iBook for a while to get this.
**HP Mini 1000 picture**

i have one now as a "backup" computer, and it's absolute trash. i literally fear the times when i'm forced to use it.

Really? I've heard nothing but good things about them. What's wrong with it?

Yeah, netbooks are extremely useful and I really want to get round to getting one for myself. Especially since a lot of them are said to work really good with osx86. Just so hard to pick out one. It really comes down to design since most of them have the exact same hardware

I'm sure there would be some sort of different alternative in some sense.

however with todays choices and if apple wanst here...I'd go with a Sager Notebook.
Might not be the most battery efficient, but theyre definitely solid systems from some people I know who currently use them as I tried them out.

Have all the people here who like Vaios actually owned one? Or are they just saying 'Ooh shiny!'?

I have a stack of 6 here at work, and not 100% impressed. But next to mac laptops, most laptops are ugly monsters.

Windows laptop makers still seem mostly confused by how to deal with the power adaptors, and ignorant of the idea that, you know, it might be worth making an object that your customer has to deal with almost every time they use the laptop, just a little bit nicer to handle.

Build my own and install Linux.
How in the heck can you build your own? There is no standardization for screens, cases, keyboards, trackpads and motherboards.

Or do you mean bare bones and add your own RAM, Hard Drive, Optical Drive and Wireless.

I really wish they would release some standards though. Though it would have to be limited in variations of thinness and size before component selection became too complicated.

Edit: Just saw the pic that you posted. That looks pretty neat though may be a bit bulky for most.

I would either go back to a sony vaio (what I had before I switched to macs) or get one of the motion computing tablets

PC: It would have to have a trackpoint because most PC trackpads suck.

I've never heard of someone building their own laptop before. Sounds pretty difficult.

You can. Just buy a case/motherboard/screen combo and add HD/RAM/Processor/GraphicsCard

I'd have a Lenovo or Toshiba, use it only for minor stuff (email, CNN.com, etc) and have a different job.

Maybe some type of a System79 machine(they have a nice 12'' laptop, that isn't a netbook)

Or a nice netbook(Dell Mini 10, maybe Dell 12)
