Nah. The iPad Pro currently has a headphone jack and you can use the pencil. It still has a niche.

For me the 4 speakers, headphone jack, and bigger screen make it a perfect candidate for a nice show as I lay in bed.

I'm also not really too keen on going bigger than 6' for a phone.

I sold my Air 2 iPad when I got my 8+ to help afford it. I use a bluetooth keyboard with my 8+ all the time (with a wireless charging stand). I do miss the iPad but my 8+ fits the bill fairly well. I read on it, take notes on it, do almost everything I can on it. I keep thinking that I want an iPad but $320+ for an A9 and 32GB :/. I'll keep living without it for now because my last purchase was my Apple Watch and I'm pretty happy with that.

Did you notice the weird screen issues when holding it a certain way? The iPad Air 2 that is.

I still have an older Apple watch. I would like one with data someday.

Yeah the iPad Pro isn't cheap so if you can do without, it's understandable that you'd hold out.

I still haven't owned an Apple pencil or used split screen yet! Haha.

I was pretty fond of my Air 2 - didn't notice any weird screen issues but I didn't look too hard. Used it mostly as a reader which is why I felt so obligated to sell it because my iPhone 8+ works really well as a reader especially on a long airplane trip (not taking iPad was one less thing to carry). I'd probably have a Pro if I could afford it easier. My first watch, late last year was the AW3 GPS - having a blast with it - still hasn't gotten old even a tiny bit. :)

Phones are getting way too big in general and I hate how both Apple and Samsung cripple the smaller devices with less features. There’s something really special about being able to use the phone with one hand comfortably.

I really like the size of the iPhone X. I won't say never especially with a product that hasn't been released. At this moment, I am happy where I am.
Me too...I couldn't envision wanting anything with a bigger screen size than the X.

Looking forward to the 6.5 inch iPhone, but Apple hasn’t done the best in balancing the weight of their devices. If you are pushing tablet size, you must be able to comfortably hold it. I hope they can make the phone lighter.

Unless one has 'Andre the Giant' size hands, a phone that size will probably require two-handed use for most people.

I am surprised the X for its smallish size, closer to Samsung S9, weighs as much as my S8+, has lots of screen real estate so I don’t need something that could be larger than my Note 8. 8 ounce iPhone X Plus?

You know, I’ve picked up the Galaxy 8 and 8 plus and we’re surprised by how light they felt compared to the iPhones. That’s what I’m talking about with these next iPhones; Apple could do with shaving off some ounces. Like my Air 2 is the lightest iPad I’ve used for the size, and it isn’t bad, but when you are holding a 5.5 inch screen, it’s just weird to hold with two hands...I don’t know how to explain it. But my air 2 is easier to hold for longer reading sessions than the plus model....I don’t know why, but I think it has to do with the size to weight ratio. I hope with a 6.5 inch screen, and the body a little bigger, the X plus is the size of a small paperback book. Then I can do away with my air 2. That’s the dream anyway.

Future iPhone's will be completely destroy ipad market. 6.5 inch upcoming iPhone will be big enough that we won't need our iPads anymore.

Lol.

People have been saying this since the first Plus sized iPhone came out back in 2015.

Ain't gonna happen.

If you want the iPhone X Plus the iPad Mini probably seems redundant given it will only be 1.4" larger in comparison. There is also the possibility that Apple will discontinue the Mini this fall.

However if you don't want the iPhone X Plus, then the Mini and any other iPad is still completely relevant and desired. I love using my iPad Mini for reading books, watching movies on the road, reading magazines, browsing before bed.

I think it may replace the iPad for many people, depending on need (obviously). It seems more and more people are using the iPhone as their primary mode of internet consumption. With iPad sales down from what they have been in the past, it will be interesting to see how the larger phone demand does in comparison to the new iPad(s).

I was considering getting an iPad, depending on what the announcement presents. I don't need a 12.9" Pro model. And for the price of such a product, I could conceivably get the larger phone model (depending on features and pricing) in lieu with easier portability.

As usual, the next several months on MacRumors will be exciting. :)

For most people these devices serve different purposes. I have both a 9.7 inch iPad Pro and an iPhone X. The iPhone X is my pocketable ultraportable device, it’s already pushing the maximum size for me when it comes to the ability to pocket it and use it one-handed. I have no desire to carry a larger iPhone, but even if I did it would not replace an iPad for me. I use the iPad at work mostly for taking notes and accessing information during meetings. At home I use it for web browsing, email, photo editing, a few games, watching video, etc. I use my iPad more than my iPhone at home and at work because the size makes it more comfortable. I use my iPhone when I’m on the go. The 6.5 iPhone X will still be a LOT smaller than the 9.7, 10.5 and 12.9 inch iPads. The only iPad it can effectively replace is the iPad Mini.

The question is whether or not you really need two iOS devices. If the larger iPhone is comfortable enough for you to use in all the ways you want to use it, then you don’t need an iPad. I work with a lot of college students. Most of them have a phablet phone and a laptop, but they rarely carry the laptop. They watch a LOT of video on their smartphones, which makes a larger Smartphone sensible. Some of them also have tablets like an iPad, but often that’s in place of a laptop rather than in addition to. I do not have a laptop either, because an iPad suits my laptop needs better than any model of MacBook, chromebook, or windows laptop.

Apple has built a pretty nice ecosystem that encourages the purchase of three portable devices
  • Apple Watch provides information at a glance, as well as fitness tracking
  • iPhone is the hub device, which can do it all in a size that can fit in a pocket or be operated with one hand
  • iPad is the larger display for when you are sitting down and want more display, and perhaps a real keyboard or the Apple Pencil.
Yes, purchasing three portable devices can easily cost a couple grand, but I used to spend as much on a much less convenient laptop.

Ipad sales are down because most people are satisfied with the one they have, and don't see any reason to replace it.

Same with the iPhone.
