If Apple invented a gaming laptop, suddenly, gaming before it would have been unbearable and Apple would have pretty much invented gaming machines.

Just like what happened with Smartphones and Tablets. Reminds me of what is described in a certain book starring a guy called Winston actually...

I can see the gaming crowd is thin on Macrumors, not even a single comment on the Razer laptop. I think it's pretty slick, especially the trackpad/LCD screen combo. The price sure isn't alluring though, I don't game enough anymore to justify that kind of expense and I wouldn't go back to Windows for it either.

It'll be interesting to see international prices because that Razer, converted to NZD and including 15% tax, is still almost NZ$600 cheaper than my MBP was.

Leave the gratuitous bashing out of my threads please. There was no battery life quoted in the Ars piece.

At first it seemed overpriced. Then after considering the parts it sounds appropriate. The GPU is 25% to 50% faster than the Radeon 6750M depending on the game. The CPU is Intel's current flagship dual core mobile CPU, which Intel always charges a premium for any top of the line model. Plus trackpad LCD which has to be custom built in small numbers and would cost considerably more than a mass produced smartphone LCD like with the iPhone.

On the battery front I would estimate that it gets roughly 2/3 the battery life of the 17" MBP which is still pretty decent. Although the CPU uses 10W less I'd think much of that gain would be lost by the GeForce GPU. Unless they are as efficient as Radeons in the mobile market, but looking at desktop models of energy usage of the GeForce vs. Radeon I would not be so optimistic.

Damn thats pricey! Looks nice but id want a better GPU in a gaming laptop. A straight conversion from $ to £ brings it out at £1,710. And thats without VAT. I have been looking at getting a gaming laptop and have seen a good 15" one with full HD LED display (1080p),
Intel i7-2720QM processor (2.20 GHz - 3.30 GHz Turbo)
160GB Intel 320 series SSD
8GB Ram
2GB Nvidia GTX 580M for £1700 with tax added on. If you dropped the SSD drive and went with the 500GB WD SCORPIO BLACK HD its only £1550.

The GTX 580M is a beast! Or they offer the Radeon 6990M instead which is about £240 cheaper if i remember rightly

It's a gimmick. On its own it's alright (though uncompetitively priced), however as a machine targeted directly at gamers, it appears deficient.

Some good ideas, but gamers will be going for raw specs. This machine hasn't really got em. The big selling point is the UI, the touchpad, and not necessarily the specs. But is this enough for gamers? And for this price?

Sure, it's "true" portability, no doubt. But is that what gamers are looking for? Many gamers have no problem carrying around a dedicated mouse. They have no problem with whatever UI is part of the OS. It's the specs they're after, unless the current crop of gamers are a little different from how I remember them.

By the looks of it Razer is targeting gamers with a dedicated gaming notebook . . . that doesn't necessarily deliver what gamers seem to be looking for, which is specs over UI.

I have never really understood the purpose of a gaming laptop anyways. With the internet, I can enjoy an online game with my friends wherever I am. What is the point of being able to lug it around wherever I go. So I can play WoW or SC2 anywhere, be it in school or work?

Seems I would be better served by spending the money tricking out a CPU and giant screen instead. :confused:

I like it... It reminds me of a Falcon North-West or Alienware laptop, regarding its target demographic.

And if I had $3k to waste, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I posted elsewhere, it's like a Macbook Pro, but with HDMI and real Windows drivers.

Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG (13-inch, Intel Dual Core 2.4ghz, AMD Radeon 6570M, 6 hours Battery Life, 1.8kg) - and this one is around a year old and nearly the same performance as the Razer, and cost a little over $1000.

Meh, dual core processor and the GPU isn't much better than the 6750M. I don't see what's so special. I'd much rather buy a 15" or 17" MBP over this, even for gaming.

We all pretty much know that if Apple made a REAL gaming laptop it wouldn't look anything like that at all. It doesn't fit Apple's motif.

IF they specifically targetted gamers, I picture something along the lines of the 17" MBP, same cast aluminum body, color and all, and if it was specifically targetted at gamers, they MIGHT put the touchpad beside the keyboard like the razer instead of under the keyboard, but even that I doubt.
