I think

Uh, you live in the "boonies" and blame AT&T for not getting 3G? Wow!!

Oh, and if you want to call Verizon the Jesus network or something like that, that's fine, but calling them the Christ, I think, will anger a lot of people on here.

he is being Sarcastic! I am sort of a expert on that since I tend to be sarcastic also! ;)

I had 3 hours of no internet access and about 30 mins of phone downtime last Wednesday. Called up ATT to see what was up. I wasn't asking for money back, or complaining, just wanted to make sure my recent JailBreak was the cause. They only gave me $40 back on my phone bill for the inconvenience. Let me tell you, a HORRIBLE company, would never do business with them again.

*edit*

also i only get 3g service 1/2 the time at my house in the boonies, such a sad day. I should switch to a GREAT company like verizon, they are the Christ you know?

They gave you $40 for a few hours of inconvience and you call them horrible? You pay $30 a month for unlimited internet and they gave you $40 for 3 hours without it. Seems like they were pretty awesome to you. It's not their fault that you live where you do and no company guarantees excellent coverage everywhere. I don't know that you would get that lucky with alot of other companies.

Looks like someone else didn't see the sarcasm either. :)

AT&T is absolutely brutal in manhattan. The voice coverage seems fine but the 3G service is pathetic. I am LUCKY if i get 300k down with speedtest.net.

They need to do some serious work in manhattan to fix this. Maybe add more bandwidth. I never had this problem with Sprint. Sprint smokes AT&T in Manhattan.

The Nokia 8260 was the sole reason I came over to ATT. I had Nextel beforehand so ATT was an improvment.

It's been good enough that I stick with it but I am primarily a gear nerd. If a different company had the iPhone I'd probably be with that company.

So far ATT has the best service with the best gear :)

Why do they 70 million customers and keep adding new users while other so carriers keep loosing millions of subscribers?

last time I checked, ATT isn't the only one adding customers, and the only carrier that has been losing is Sprint. Not sure where you got so many other carriers are losing millions.

For me, ATT was one of the worst. Can't even make a phone call and never get 3G at my work place which is in the middle of Manhattan where coverage is 100%.

ALL carriers have good spots and bad. ATT isn't perfect, so you might want to check your facts before making claim that others are losing millions.

For those using the argument that ATT should be up to speed like the other carriers have a baseless argument. The bottom line is - they are DIFFERENT networks. Different user base. Different infrastructures and were created at different times. I have not done the research -but How old is the rogers network vs ATT's? And is it possible that the newer network was already built with MMS in mind vs an older one which needs to be "retro-fitted". Or perhaps the newer network didn't take mms into consideration and the older one is more capable and easier to upgrade.

Point is - unless you know the infrastructure, history and specs of all the "players" you're complaining about and against - you have no frame of reference and are just ignorant. And no - I don't mean ignorant as an insult, but by the true definition of not having knowledge.
I concur...from what I have read and heard, CDMA requires far less towers to achieve the same coverage as GSM so that has to figure into some of this...
Also from what I read CDMA has its advantages, but it seems that it is limited to just the USA....
I agree with those preferring great smartphone/good signal over good smartphone/great signal...jmo of course...
VZW's phone selection is just too limited and to crippled for my tastes...

I can't speak for the others. I am with them ONLY because of my iPhone. I would unlock it and move over to T-Mobile in a second if T-Mobile had 3G with a frequency compatible with the iPhone!

Who really cares about MMS with an iPhone? I don't. If it is an extra fee to send a MMS then count me out. I'd rather send video or a pic via email anyday.

I also don't know why so many people have a vendetta against AT&T. I have never had problems with support or service, and it works better than any other company in terms of international use.

My apologies, I thought it was clear that I was talking about their short term profit hit because of subsidies, because I said it was for a couple of years.

Until ATT gets paid back, it's not money in their hands, and this affected their earnings.

That's 6 months old, now that the 3G users are a year into their contract those subsidies are pretty much paid off.

Do you really think AT&T would subsidize a phone so much they couldn't make a profit?

I'll say this though, they'd better start making iPhone plans more enticing. Apple and current iPhone customers are ready to leave the second Apple announces a second partner in the US.

I disagree. First, you're basing your analysis on the posters here and maybe a small percentage of your sphere of influence. I could just as easily say I know the same if not more people that absolutely LOVE AT&T and the services/prices they offer and would never switch. This board barely registers the typical iphone user/att subscriber base.

That being said - you can't just say that the 3G owners have paid off their subsidy. It's not like the full amount of your bill first goes to paying off your phone and THEN goes to pay for service. Do you know what percentage of each cell bill is used to pay off the subsidy?

I'm not advocating they are or they are not. But the truth is - it's all conjecture unless you're privy to the full business model of at&t. Which I'm pretty sure you're not.

that is assuming other carriers offer a better deal. Other carriers wont over-subsidize either, so similar prices I imagine. Of course those that hate ATT/love TMoblie etc will leave, but will still pay about the same

T-Mobile offers a lot more flexible plans for their G1 customers than AT&T does to their iPhone customers. If T-Mobile offered the iPhone, I don't see why they would not apply the same policy to it as they currently do to the G1.

Then I'd be able to choose a 300-minute voice plan ($29.99) and an unlimited data + 400 text plan ($24.99), saving $15 compared with the cheapest AT&T plan for the iPhone.

But maybe t-mobile won't subsidize the phone - or not as much.

Maybe they'll be an iphone data plan specific to the iphone just like AT&T

It's all conjecture

Of course it is. Did you miss all the past subjunctive forms that I used in my post above? ;)

Verizon is the worst! They sell the same exact phones ATT&T sells, for the most part, but with less features. It's BS what they do. I'll never go back to those jerks.

I agree. Laugh everytime when hearing how good Verizon is. Here in Texas
ATT is by far the superior carrier. A lot of this negative press comes out
of Ca(SF area) and NYC where ATT has stated they are restricted to one frequency band. This will soon not be the case as I recently read.

Nope.

CDMA World Coverage Maps

The problem is each CDMA provider is allowed to tweak it a bit, so phones are not compatible worldwide. There's an initiative to add a global standard mode, but not sure how far it's gotten recently.

But I suspect that most USA customers never travel outside of the USA, Canada and Mexico, and so are not affected by that.

Thank you for the info. I couldn't use my VZW phone when I traveled internationally and that was a severe limitation. Seems it still is until there is some sort of standard set which may or may not happen. My GSM AT&T phone works well outside the USA thank goodness. I travel mostly to Europe.

They aren't BAD.. just do some really stupid **** from time to time. IE: Not having MMS ready when third world countries could have it ready in time if they had the iPhone. lol.
