Samsung and Huawei designs are interesting but, the high price and 1st attempt with the form factor are a no go for me.
I honestly feel like foldable phones are gonna flop and will never take off.

That's definitely something that could be improved. But if you really need to get the creases out, nothing a little ironing can't fix.

But for $1000... sign me up Johnny. Bravo for Huawei, they did a fantastic job.
I am concerned about the screen. Reviewers haven’t been able to touch the screen but plastic is plastic and I can only imagine it’s going to feel the same was as past plastic screens.

It’s not gonna be a runway hit because it’s freaking 1800-2600 bucks. Come on. Tech people and youtubers will likely love it but for it to be a hit, obviously the price have to come down.
I love them pushing the envelope though. Apple will need to up there game and guess who wins?
US!!!! Competition is good. It bring the best out of people and brings down prices.

Who said anything about Apple even releasing a foldable iPhone? I always find it interesting that just because the competition releases something first, others are under the assumption that Apple ‘can’t do it any better’, which usually ends with Apple making the experience even more refined for the user.

Huawei’s Mate X is a better looking foldable than Samsung, but Samsung does have one advantage. The U.S. while Samsung announced that the Galaxy Fold will be treated like the Apple Watch Edition with luxury care, I’ll be interested to see how popular it is here and globally. I’ve overlooked the “it’s too expensive”. If something can be put on a payment plan for $50/Month, yeah it’s. It expensive. My co-worker complained that I spent $1500 for the XS Max, but bought the same phone on a monthly plan.
It also folds out as a square. What app, picture, or video is going to fill the screen? None. Also the OS would have to be able to run two apps in two separate windows at the same time for it to be marginally useful.
Alot of people said the same about front screen phones. People said nobody would want an on-screen keyboard... back when blackberry was thriving.. and flip phones were all the rage.... Seems silly now.
Same thing will happen with folding phones, eventually they will be refined, Apple will jump in to the fold (pun intended) and they will become a mainstream device that will replace your phone and tablet.... Just like the iPhone replaced your flip phone and ipod.
Nobody knows if foldable phone (or tablets?) will be succesful or not.There are many technologies that were supposed to be a revolution but were never adopted (modular phones, 3d screens...).
It's not supposed to have a single app fill the screen. Look at how an iPad works with multitasking.

Nobody put their hands up for modular phones or 3D displays. The global market is all moving towards larger and larger displays.
The Mate X is thinner than an iPad Pro and has a larger display than iPad mini.
The design concept of the Huawei is much better than the Samsung. It makes much more sense to have the screen fold outward instead of inward for many reasons. But right now, there are way too many compromises that will keep these designs as niche products (which is the biggest reason that Apple wouldn't do a folding design at this point in time). If Samsung and Huawei can manage to sell a few million of these, they would be lauded as pioneers and innovators. If Apple sold 10 million folding iPhones, it would be a flop and AAPL would be doomed.
Getting back to the design aspects. Right now, the screens have to be plastic, which is a huge turnoff for many reasons. But what if a manufacturer could design a hinge that allow two separate glass screens to unfold with the appropriate tolerances so that the it essentially becomes one continuous screen? I really do like how the Huawei design has the "ridge" when unfolded. It gives you a handle to hold onto the "tablet".

I think Samsung is making a mistake limiting sales of the Fold to select retailers. When Huawei has a phone that's unanimously agreed by tech journalists to be a better design, you can't play hard to get with the Fold. These phones are intended to be marketing statements and hiding them is a waste, at least for Samsung.
exactly nobody knows if they will be succesful, and nobody knows that they will be a failure.
We saw it with phablets, fast/wireless charging, dual-SIM, etc. We'll see it this year when Apple adopts 3 rear cameras like Huawei. And again with folding.
Well, it's certainly true that Apple makes the best phones in the world. But they are frequently not first with new tech. They just do it better and it becomes Apple's product. That said, I have no interest in a phone with moveable parts.
I thought foldable screens sounded cool, but I couldn't really get my head around how it would be practically better than a regular screen. Samsung's effort didn't do anything to change my mind, but Huawei's does a little bit. I've always sort of been drawn to the phones that had a separate (e-ink, for example) screen on the back to permanently show calendar/time/notifications, and could see a future for Huawei's design: a single screen that wraps around and allows content to get bigger when unfolded. I still think we're a couple years from this really making sense, but at least now I'm starting to get it.
