I plan on getting a Macbook Pro tonight at the Apple store. What I was wondering is if something comes out within the 14 days of purchase- can I get an upgrade on the new release or not. If I cant oh well. Just curious how that works.

Thanks

Within 14 days you can return yours, pay a 10% "restocking" fee, and then buy a new one.

with some rumors pointing to sept. 5th and others to sept. 12 for new products, you really can't wait?

That 10% is really steep more than the cost it was to put memory in my MBP! Anyway if your a low end user buy now and don't worry about merom you probably don't need it. If you are a high end user then just wait the few weeks or so.

You can wait a few weeks, i could not so i got mine :)

Me too :) I would suspect they would be released in a week or two but it may take a month for them to come in. I was looking around in the paper yesterday and most of the laptops still had Core Duo in them so I'm not sure they are so readily available yet (Well in Australia anyway)

What follows is speculation, but very probable: When Apple announces them on the 12th, they will be shipping right away. More likely than not, stores will also have them that very same day. We haven't seen them yet because Apple has been busy manufacturing them en masse for the launch.

I don't know if that will apply to Australia too...took us a few weeks to get the bluetooth mighty mouse when they were ready for shipping in US. Perhaps, I don't know.

Ah yes, I didn't notice. I have no clue how Apple operates over in Aussieland.

I would purchase your MBP now, and if you're not completely satisfied... you can return it within those 14 days.

Since when does Apple have a no quibble return policy? I wouldn't.. the restocking fee is pretty expensive.

exactly what i did. but it's an iMac 20". i just have to pay 10% restocking fee. which to me, it is nothing compared to having regrets later.

I think waiting for a few weeks (or a few months) would be a good advice as it seems Merom chip update is in the works.

Also, this timing of Merom updates would provide Mac owners how Apple will incorporate the updated chips in their product lines in the future compared to other PC makers (as some of them have already announced the updates).

Wow, y'all are easy on the restock fee. Paying $150-$200 to return something is nuts. There may be a better machine around the corner, but you'd have to factor in the return fee you just ate to the new unit price. Ouch!
I am a very impatient person myself, but 10% penalties cause me to learn a little patience.

Other features

I'm in a similar boat, having bought a new MacBook online that still hasn't even arrived yet (purchased mid-August but with supplies low because of the updates it looks like they had to ship mine straight from China, according to FedEx).
It's supposed to arrive tomorrow, just a week before the updates. For me, as a low-end user (using only a MacBook), I don't really care about processor upgrades enough to return it, but if they offer some other great new feature, I probably will.
When I bought my current iBook last year, they released a version three weeks later that had Bluetooth and a larger hard drive, something I've been kicking myself for ever since. So I'm definitely not going to just keep this one if the same thing happens.

You should be safe with the Macbook.....not a whole lot of people think that it will be getting Core 2 Duo at the same time the Macbook Pro does.

I dont get the whole restocking thing, i've returned alot of stuff and have never been charged a restocking fee. Although i pack everything back as pristine as possible. Now that i've said so im sure the next time i want to return something karma will bite me in the connolies and demand a restocking fee.

The restocking fee does not apply to defective units.

Once you boot up and configure your system, Apple can not re-sell your system
as new.

They have to wipe the HD, change the serial number and repackage your system as a refurb even if you return it in perfect condition.

The only exception is if you return your purchase unopened.

There is no restocking fee for Apple returns in Europe (or at least Ireland).

And this is exactly what I'm thinking of doing. I can order a MBP tonight and have it delivered by Friday....if new models come out tuesday, just pack it in the same box and post back to apple for a refund...then buy the new model!

Oh god what do I do....!?

If you buy knowing for certain that you will return your purchase within two weeks
IF there's an update, then don't even open the box. If nothing happens, you have your MBP if they get an update, turn it back in.

Was just wondering what you meant by this? Maybe I am missing something but I am about to buy a MacBook Pro here in Scotland in a few weeks, are you saying there may be an updated version of the product due for release very soon? Forgive me if I have completely got the wrong end of any stick.

quit whining about 10% restocking. i pay 15% just to make sure the local retailer's profits don't get hurt. i guess i pay for their quality of service and not employing total dumb arses like best buy. (thats the worst name ever. its not even a good buy)
