While you are right that's it's not harmful your explanation is total BS.

Just that a kind of radiation is all around us doesn't make a laser with that wavelength harmless.

It's all about the energy which hits your eyes for a specific time. That's why a green laser pointer with more than 1mW can kill your eyesight. Even when we have a lot of green light outdoors;)

I worked with lasers for a living. The problem with lasers usually is that they are very focused and this can harm your eyes. So anything above 1mW is forbidden for personal use.

So I hope Apple sticks to that. But with the dot projector the energy per point should be much weaker...

My explanation is hardly BS, nor is it counterfactually proven as such by your unrelated observations.

You quoted that a laser is not harmful as long as we have the same radiation in nature. And that's BS.
It's the amount of energy which counts. Use a magnifying glass for the sun to burn paper or your skin. Please don't try with your eye;)

The ones to cut steel or other materials use natural wavelengths. But in a highly focused energetic way.

The unrelated observation comes actually from a law in Europe which regulates the energy output of lasers for a reason...

A lot of the responses here are stupid and unscientific. Diffuse infrared radiation from the sun is not the same as an IR laser directed at your face and eyes. No one can conclusively say that Face ID is safe for constant long-term use, because no long-term epidemiological studies have been done. Anyone who flippantly says it’s 100% safe has no idea what they’re talking about.

Or those warning in business. Like cancers labels at a store. There’s those cover you ass labels everywhere. Video games have seizure warnings.

My whole house had a huge could cause cancer warning on it...right by the door in from the garage. California is nuts and they had to list materials used in the construction that might possibly be associated with cancer...like the pipes, paint, wires, and anything else that might possibly be harmful. What useless info! Like we are all going to live outside instead? And even that has risks too! These warnings at some point are pointless and people just ignore.

This is part of why I’m really not wanting to use a Face ID device. The potential health risks really put me off. I hope before the iPhone 8 series becomes unusable Apple will have perfected an under-screen fingerprint sensor and offer both options.

I would be more concerned about radiation from the sun or a microwave than I would be from face ID. Granted, There are not enough studies to make any fair evaluation based off what Face ID may or may not contribute to in terms of health risks, it’s a to each their own situation what they choose to use or not.

Then don't you worry about the RF radiation when you have your phone against your head or in your pocket? I would say this is a greater danger if you worry about potential health risks.

More about having a focused beam (as opposed to diffuse field) potentially striking your retina repeatedly multiple times a day...

I favour TouchID as well, but I’m not kidding myself, FaceID has already proven reliable enough that Apple has no reason to invest money of researching, developing, and mass producing a new form of TouchID.

My hope is when they want to de-notch and go full frontal screen they will go back to touch behind the glass to minimise the optics they have to make see through the screen...

You *should* be concerned about radiation from the sun. Your microwave is not an issue.

Infrared lasers from Face ID being beamed at your eyes and face hundreds of times per day over the long-term? Is a total unknown.

Did I not already state that? Not sure why you need to reiterate something I already commented on.

Hence:

I would be more concerned about radiation from the sun

And:

Again, you’re rehashing something that I already commented on, when I clearly stated in the Bolded:

There are not enough studies to make any fair evaluation based off what Face ID may or may not contribute to in terms of health risks

However:

While you worry about the *total unknowns*, I will just continue using my iPhone X and be completely content with it and will deal with long-term risks if there are, _Any_, at all.

Why did you remove my comments from its context? I was pointing out that while it’s correct to be concerned about solar radiation it is not necessary to worry about your microwave. As for Face ID, if the risk is worth it to you that’s fine. Personally I’m pretty torn because I love new tech but don’t really want to test it on my retinas.

After promoting FaceID as the greatest and most secure way to unlock your phone ever, going back to any form of TouchID in their flagship is about as likely as bringing back the headphone jack, which is something else I would like, but I know won’t happen.
Apple doesn’t go back once they’ve decided that they’ve “improved” something.
