LOL, that made me laugh. :D

I'm pretty sure that won't happen. I mean, they don't do it on Android.

They don't do it on Android...

Yet...

The problem is that all the mobile carriers in the US are seeking new profit streams.

Companies like Verizon want to install their own apps on Android. They want to sell ads too.

Potentially... In Verizon's ultimate goal...

When you walk by Starbucks, the Verizon app will pop up an alert on your phone, saying something like, "Get $1 off a $5 coffee" etc.....

Maybe I'm an old fart, but I don't want a mobile company or any other advertising company annoying me via my phone every time I walk by their partners stores.

That is a downside of the power of the carriers, and the openness of Android.

Back to the Google glasses. Maybe they'll have a $1200 version and a $300 ad-supported version like the mock-up here?

People often forget, that even though Google provides us with many free and great services, they make 98% of their revenue by displaying ads.

I'm not anti-Google, I just look these projects from a business point of view, how are they going to make money?

Couldn't agree more. If people aren't at least somewhat concerned about this, their hopelessly naive.

If people have a vision of the future being where they are empowered terminator style by this pure uncorrupted flow of information - forget it!
Instead of "I'll be back" it will more likely be "I'll be back ... after stopping by McDonald's for a Happy Meal".

Add Google's vision of ultimate data collection.

Add to the pic

Hep C and HIV+

Two children from two Baby Daddies.

5 restraining orders against two ex-husbands and 2 crazy ex-boyfriends.

5 Speeding tickets, 25 parking tickets.

1 indecent exposure in during spring break in Mexico.

Now I'm joking....

but Eric Schmidt said that most people under 30 are going to want to change their legal names in order to dissociate themselves from the stupid things they said on the Internet in their teens and 20's. Google will never forget these indiscretions.

I'm always amazed by the stupid comments people post on websites via Facebook connect with their real names. That's another story.

While techies like you and I can do this, do you want to explain to your non tech friends or 90 year old grandmother how to do whitelist and blacklist. Is Starbucks on the whitelist or blacklist? What about the servers (IP Adresses) that transmit graphics or ecommerce forms site?

Should we tell all our friends to turn off GPS every time they walk by Starbucks? To them this is a tech failure.

This isn't a current issue but a potential issue, a way mobile companies want to make more money.

Let's keep this going.

If you know, please enlighten me. How do the ad blockers work?

Do they block all data or graphic data, blocking ads VS blocking ads and cookies?

I know on a Mac I can use Little Snitch or edit the hosts file. What are chrome and safari adblocking extensions doing?

Are they actually blocking everything or just preventing the browsers from displaying them? I'd like to know if you have any insight.

Thanks

It will display connection errors in Android. It's done in the system's hosts file, and is used universally within the OS. Safari Adblock just prevents them from loading.

What Glass will actually look like:

You ruined it!

I doubt it will be this in-your-face but true it's going to get advertising.

I'd say it'll be more like when you walk past a shop a you get notified of deals and things.

The weird thing is, something like it will probably become reality. It's like a quote from the Social Network: 'People don’t walk around with signs around their necks to tell the world if they’re dating or not' :D

That's exactly what I thought of when I saw your picture :D

Thanks for responding and sorry to derail the thread but...

So from my understanding with your info...

Adblock in Safari or Chrome browsers just prevent the browser itself from displaying the ads. So the ads are still downloaded?

Depends on how the extension is written, mostly both. Here's how the Chrome version is done (from their FAQ):

Adblock Plus is a content-blocking browser extension. It blocks HTTP request so it can prevent any unwanted element (such as advertising) from being loaded in the browser. It also uses stylesheets and element hiding so that websites will look normal even if the advertising is being cut out.

Didn't you know? Google have blocked AdBlock Plus from Android .... open my ass :) Now they are using their gSheep to collect data on OTHER people not just them..... if i see someone with a pair of these on pointing the camera at me, they won't be working for very long...

Disgusting that a ad company has wormed its way into every day life.. and yet people are fine with it.

Your whole post is a fail. Adblock for Android had been exploiting a security hole in order for it to provide this service to non-root users. A bug report was then filed and Google corrected this.

There are plenty of other ways to do this same thing.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good Google bashing session right?

Damn right :) http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/02/20/google_adblock_plus/

I will bash Google to the end of the world, in my opinion they do more harm to the Internet, free speech etc than any other company.
