If no headless iMac at MacWorld....

If Steve fails to announce a cheap headless Mac tower I am going to do this with any Apple products I have, including a new MacBook, and then switch to Windows XP.

This biggest drawback to Mac OS X is the lack of a "second source" for hardware. This allows Apple to set their high prices and to dictate to the user that they must survive with the limited hardware options that make sense to Apple's business model.

I've had enough of this CRAP :mad: My shredding machine is already warming up!

Wow, that seems to be a bit extreme wouldn't you say? I feel your pain, I too would love a headless iMac or small tower that I can upgrade myself... but I don't think destroying your equipment is going to make any difference in Apple's decisions. Perhaps donating them to some needy child or organization might bring you more satisfaction than simply destroying them? As for switching to XP, I won't be going back there. I use it for a few games I have but I left that world 2 yrs ago. Best of luck with whatever you buy.
 
Why don't you just put XP on your MacBook?

Destroying your computer (which I very much doubt you will do) will not hurt Apple in the slightest, they have already had your money.
 
6 years a member of MR, so probably longer than that actually being a Mac user. and NOW you have a tantrum?
 
i'm quitely confident that the mac mini will not be discontinued, but rather bumped up - what possible reason could apple have for EOL'ing it?

would a bumped Mac Mini (2.33GHz Core2, 2GB RAM, dedicated mobile graphics) do it for you??

I do not get statements like this one here. If you go and spec out a Dell/Gateway/HP/Whatever with equivalent hardware/software to an iMac 20" or 24". I highly doubt that the price will be off by much at all. Matter of fact probably more money i.e. "XPS 1, Gateway One" for inferior hardware and software. Now remember "equivalent" hardware, I am not talking about ECS mobo's and low/mid range AMD chips. I am talking latest Intel Mobo's with latest Intel chips and Nvidia/ATI video, and 20/24" high end monitors. I know allot of people in here cry and moan about these displays on the iMac's, but I still have yet to see a 24" display that is as sharp and bright as the one on my 24" iMac, and remember the keyword again "equivalent".
 
I really doubt they'll be releasing such a thing, at least not this time... it all seems likely to be dedicated to the new notebook.

So... care to pass that equipment on to me, and I'll shred it for you :D
 
I agree - a headless tower isn't coming this time round, but i see no reason wh y the mac mini can't be upgraded to a more powerful machine. With RAM so cheap 2GB standard, 4GB max isn't unreasonable, and the new Merom chips are just dying to be used in something like this. Pop in a 200GB 5400rpm drive and most people will be happy.

I'd be especially happy if there was the option for a 7200 rpm drive and dedicated mobile graphics chips.

There doesn't need to be any great fanfare over these improvements. I expect the keynote will run as follows

total: 1:20hours

10mins: intro/sales figures
30mins: iTunes 8/movie rentals
10mins: MBP/MacMini improvements
30mins: Slim laptop thing

Here is a idea for you...
Sell your macs and take the money build a killer tower and but OS X on it!
I too wish there was something between the tower and the imac. A imac that used non laptop components.

While what you say is true, no-one has a gun to your head. If you don't like the prices, don't buy Apple products. Get a better priced alternative from Dell.

I see no problem in paying a premium price for a premium product. Apple knows this and prices accordingly. While a MacBook/iMac costs more than a Windows equivalent, it's a much better user experience than Vista. That's worth something, no? By the same reasoning, BMW/Mercedes cost more than Toyota/Nissan. To BMW purchasers, the price premium is worth it even though transportation can be bought for much less money.

Stop being a whiny sensationalist. You're not shredding anything and we all know it.

So if you don't get a new mac to your liking, you'll shred your old ones? How does the existence or lack thereof of a "headless imac" change whether or not you like your macbook?
 
Sounds like more of a threat than a promise - I will wait to see your video evidence because my bet is that there is a .001 % chance that such a machine will get released.
 
I need a new computer to replace my Windows PC.. can you send your MacBook to me instead of destroying it? ;);)

well DUH! Some people need to understand this: APPLE IS NOT OUR FRIEND. It is a business, just like any other and wants to make as much money as it can. And one of the ways it does this is as you described as above. It doesnt NEED to offer education discounts, it has every right to take them away, it doesnt NEED to make anything if it doesnt make sense financially.

Yes, this does annoy a lot of people, including myself, but how many people would like it if competition laws forced apple to make OS X work on ALL pc's...like dell's and toshiba's. Im telling you now, a lot of people would complain about that too (not including apple exec's)

I'd disagree with this entirely.

Mac's actually aren't any more expensive than the PC equivelant. Ok, while PC equivelants generally some with larger screens, for the price of the 2GHz Macbook, you'll only get something like a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo PC Laptop.

I also recently compared prices of a Dell system in comparison to the iMac's and the iMac was about £50 ($100) CHEAPER than the dell system with the same specs.

You need to factor in all the extras you get with a Mac (such as the Front Row Remote which costs about an extra £20($40) for a pc equivelant), you get WiFi, and Bluetooth built in, you get high quality software preinstalled such as iLife 08 at no extra cost.

Also, with a windows PC, you have to invest in anti virus, anti spyware, and firewall software (if you opt for the free stuff, you still have to invest time in finding a suitable solution).

All in all, I believe Mac's are great value, and they really do 'Work straight out of the box'. When I built my PC a year ago, I paid £1400 ($2800) for it. If I'd known then what I know and love about Mac's now, I probably would have gone for the iMac or the Mac Pro....I am incidentally replacing my PC with a Mac desktop when the new revisions to the iMac's come (then I will compare both the iMac and the Mac Pro).

If we're talking value, I agree. Macs are much better value. If we're talking cash, then you just can't get a Mac for the same price as a Vista box.

I just went through this when I tried to convince my sister-in-law to get a MacBook. She's a single mom without a steady income. She was able to buy a C2D Gateway laptop with 1gb ram, DVD burner, 250gb HD for $599. The lowest 'new' MacBook costs considerably more for lower hardware specs.

I tried hard to sell the value proposition, but to her the premium still represented several hundred dollars that she doesn't have. Plus, she would still be able to run her existing software.

Fact is, Macs cost more. I wish they didn't, but they do.
 
So you will destroy thousands of dollars worth of computers because you cannot spend your money for more :confused: Do you mind videoing it for us so we can see.

I won't be shocked if they/he/she does it. In fact if they/he/she/it feels that strongly about it, I'll turn the machine on for them and sing "sha-na-na-na, na-na-na-na, hey hey hey, good bye!"
