Third, one of those who you think are stealing from Sony is the US Air Force, which bought 2,000 PS3s to build a cheap, small supercomputer. Sony then released a software update that when applied make these 2,000 PS3s unusable for the purpose they were bought for.

That's a little far-fetched. I doubt the US Air Force is using those PS3s to play games and log into the PSN anyway, so they are in no way forced to upgrade their working PS3s to this firmware.

And seriously, what did they expect going forward on a project to build a computing cluster out of game consoles ? As nice a project as it was to actually make it work, it was bound to not be a viable long-term solution.

As much as I don't agree with what Sony is doing, your example was really badly selected.

I'm sensing a troll thread and OP its clear you don't know what you are talking about so let me educate:

This thread was about retail stores, but since you brought it up, I don't see anything wrong with Sony protecting their investment and hence their shareholders. Do you also have a problem with Artist going after people who download their music without paying? Do you hate Sony for any particular reason? People who try to steal things and then get upset over the fact the person your stealing from is legally coming after you need to get a clue. This would include you since you find Sony so wrong for doing so.

Do you realize Sony is not an angel? Back in 2005 they released rootkits on some of their CDs. These rootkits would install on a users computer without their knowledge, opening it up for attacks. These rootkits could not be removed by Sony, and joint efforts by security groups? (Microsoft had to end up releasing security patches for Windows that could get rid of it by re-writing parts where the files existed.)

Heres a link that sums a lot of it up if you don't believe me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BMG_copy_protection_rootkit_scandal

Now also remember the PS3 was touted as being able to run Linux (from Sony), people bought the PS3 expecting this feature, then Sony took the feature away. Thats a form of bait and switch and people simply wanted their feature back so hackers came along and gave them a solution. Sure it can allow for pirated games but there are many ways to accomplish that without the methods Geohot published. Ever buy electronics in other parts of the world? They are all modded and play hacked games.

Just a question, have you ever posted anything about Apple and it's under age slave labor issues as well as the suicides and horrible working conditions in China? Probably not, keep enjoying your Apple product while questioning the ethics of other manufactures.

You know that you just posted completely false information right? WHERE do you see "under age slave labor issues" regarding Apple? I'd love to see a source. Anyway I'm assuming you are talking Foxconn when talking about manufacturers. Do you realize Sony also buys from Foxconn? As does pretty much every other manufacturer? Do you realize that Apple was one of the few companies who sent investigators to check out working conditions of the factory?

http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/18/apple-completes-ipod-city-investigation-into-foxconn/

Please get your facts straight next time.

As for the original reason the post exists, no I do not think the Sony store looks nicer than the Apple store. Yes the Sony store is bright and colorful but the merchandise gets lost in the decor of the store. When I walk into an Apple store I can see every piece of merchandise they have at a glance. As another poster stated, Apple's store decor is their merchandise.

You're forgetting that Apple is no angel either. Or Microsoft. Or Google. Or any company to that matter. So who cares?

I don't like it, but Apple Stores that much better IMO. If I'm buying a computer, I am definitely not going in there. It's too overdone. But Apple is nice, easy and simple. It looks like Sony is trying too hard.

Looks like a Bloomingdales in there. ... kinda.

When I hold something as great to use as an iPhone (and in about two weeks an iPad 2), I'm inclined to forgive Apple around half their wickedness. Yeah, be evil, but give me more Apple gear. Apple tech goodness makes up for a lot. Not all, but enough.

Unequal things to unequal people (or companies.)

Every time I walk into an Apple Store I get the feeling I'm walking into an IKEA store. Its got that real cheap feel to it. I love their minimalist decor but Apple needs to refresh it with a more upgraded look.

Apple stores did look great when new, but now that they've been around a while they do look dull.

You will notice that selectively, Apple builds very nice high end stores in New York an a few other locales. The rest of us get the same old look.

OH Burn!!!! Man... how can I ever come back after that epic Zing?!?!

Probably by quickly googling how many Sony stores are out there:
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...angId=-1&identifier=S_SonyStyle_Store_Listing

Less than 30.
pwned :p

That is in the USA only. Not the rest of the world. And them are only taking into account the 'Sony Style' stores, not the Sony Galleria ones or the few other shop brand manes they appear to have.

Hardly an 'epic' come back was it? It reminds me when the Americans on this forum tried to persuade the rest of us that Nokia didn't know how to make a mobile phone.

. Let's just give credit where it is due. This store looks amazing, and I have yet to find anyone objective that says different.

Maybe I'm the first. I like the Apple Store design. It's clean, it's open, it's easy, it puts the focus where it should be: on the product itself. The Sony Store is nice enough, but it looked cluttered and busy (in terms of design, not customers). It doesn't do much to differentiate itself from other retail concepts.

Okay, that Sony store is quite good. I like how the information is displayed on the table and they have huge TV's showing stuff too. 2 things I hate about the Apple Stores are the information, um, things. Reminiscent of the ones we made in year 7 at school, in our Apple store they usually get moved to wrong products. It's not so good.

Don't like the laptop stands in the Sony store though. But overall I prefer Sony's new look.

Our local Sony store is a bit horrible at the moment. Full of transparent bubble windows showing off old tech.

I count 54 in Canada... added to your "less than 30", we're at about 80 now :

http://www.sony.ca/html/ss_location/sonystyle_store_map.html

That's 2 countries down... Care to count the rest of the stores worldwide ?

Again. Reality, grasp it. At this point, you're making it clear you have no clue what you're talking about. And as Roadbloc says, you've just pointed out the "SonyStyle" stores only.

Maybe it's just the Montreal downtown store, but I find the store tries too hard. All you see when you get it are the big murals that are essentially billboards for Apple products, not the products themselves, which are hidden behind hordes of freeloaders that have no intention to buy.

Going in there to make a purchase is always a pain, trying to get hold of an actual employee that isn't being bothered by someone that is walking out the door empty handed. And when you do manage to get hold of someone, you usually get told "Oh, I'll go get someone to help you" which will usually take another 15 minutes.

Looks like **** IMO. "Modern" doesn't always equal good.

Furthermore, I think minimalist is best. When I'm shopping I couldn't give a rats ass what else is around.

It looks like they stuck a bunch of electronics on the sales floor of a Bath & Bodyworks outlet. Kitsch at best.

+1 to almost everything LTD has said so far with one exception:

Sony TV sets aren't so great nowadays. They aren't awful, just not clearly better than anyone else like they used to be.

Why pick on LTD for not liking the Sony store or many Sony products? Some people here do indeed like LTD. Me for example. :D

I hope Sony has improved their VAIO desktops since the P4 days.... I knew someone with one of those turkeys..... A "higher-spec" one too. It cost them almost $2k, had little memory, crummy graphics, ran very hot and sounded like a jet trying to take off.
The only good Sony products I've seen are my ancient Discman, Hanycam and 1st-gen digital camera.

Since the early 2000's all they've got aside from PS3 is mediocre TV sets, lousy computers and the whole Rootkit fiasco.... I'm sure not buying any Sony products anytime soon.

And what's wrong with IKEA anyway? Just don't look at the posting of my computer table too close...

The only thing wrong with Apple stores is that they're always very crowded.

Have Fun,

So basically, what you are saying is that if Microsoft went to Africa and shot everyone in there, you'd hate them for it; but if Apple did it, you'd turn a blind eye and wouldn't care. All because you prefer their products.

Nice.

Are you also saying that you are addicted to holding Apple products? That sounds serious?
What are the withdrawal symptoms? Rational thinking, an open mind?

Manhattan/Paris/Shanghai get the best of everything, whether it be an Apple Store, Bed Bath & Beyond or even grocery center. The rest of us get the vanilla look.

Stop using anything related to the word gaudy. There are other words you can use to describe sony's store!

Do you know Apple Stores contain understated
Real granite floor.
Real wood tables.

Not the fake laminated floors or tables in the Sony Store.

Also, PR video: "every time you get in here it can be a completely different experience."

LOL. So they are doing the super market way of moving things around to confuse people, in the hope that people will spend more time in the store.

Who cares I'm not buying the store
