If Steve hates Flash so much, why doesn't he block it from OSX?

Steve has gone on an all out war against Adobe, including publicly insulting them by calling them lazy.

He should go one further, and actually release a patch for OSX that blocks any Flash content on OSX.

That will kill off Flash and would be a huge win for Apple.

A lot of people are getting pissy about it not being on iPhone OS, take it away from OS X and i think apple will lose quite a few customers. It will happen eventually though, its a gradual process.

If he gimps my MBP I'm off to Windows or Linux if it's improved since the early 2000's. I hear W7 is pretty nice to use actually and I'm sick of Jobs and all this Flash nonsense. When I buy a bit of equipment, I don't want to be nannied, I want it to do what I want it to do. I couldn't give a toss about battery life, I don't live outside in the street, at most I'll use a portable a couple of hours away from a recharge point.

I doubt it can be blocked. With non-jailbroken iPhone, you can only get apps from App Store but with OS X you are not limited to Apple downloads. You can download and install any app you want from any site in the world. Steve could block it from Safari but there would be workarounds available very soon plus other browsers would support it anyway.

Well iPhone OS manages without Flash perfectly fine. I think OS X will be fine without flash as well. As for youtube, there is already a HTML5 implementation.

Yes. And the following day OSX marketshare would begin to tank as everyone started BootCamping into alternatives for their web browsing. Within a couple of years websites wouldn't even be checked for Mac compatibility anymore. Do you want to go back to those days?

BTW, some of us really don't care too much about YouTube being HTML5 already. Media delivery systems the world over are currently built on Flash, including the BBC iPlayer.

Flash is a resource hog. It's continual return to the CPU during use means higher heat, more power used, and a greater chance for system crash. The first two are obviously a problem for portable devices (and, as Steve Jobs has said "Apple is a Mobile Device Company now"), less so if the device can be plugged in and/or has fans.

As far as i am concerned the only reason that i would like flash on my computer is because it is used in places and would be annoying to not access some sites. However i have to agree with Jobs in that it is slow & buggy. Do you enjoy using those websites where they are just one big flash app? I personally think their hideous!

E.g. Chrome has/is getting Flash integrated to the browser so it would be impossible for Apple to block it without blocking the whole Chrome. That would start another war between Apple and Google so sooner than later Apple would kill itself because other companies would start to avoid Apple and stop making software etc.

Flash is something I cannot stand. It's used for those invasive ads and it's used to make noises come from my speakers when I'd rather browse in silence. But if I want to block it, I will block it. The other day, I went to my son's university web site in mt iPod touch and nothing came up. Nothing. Zip. No explanation, just nothing. It's flash based and as soon as you arrive at the site you hear singing. Still, I'd rather have the option to switch off that annoying flash myself and not have it done for me by the os.

LOL. I heard a similar prediction in 1998 when Apple announced that the iMac wasn't going to have a floppy drive. What a hornet's nest that was. Looks to me like Apple turned out to be right, since the company survived, the iMac survived (thrived), and everybody else quit putting floppies in their computers too.

Steve knows what's best for us. If he thinks Flash is bad, then it's bad.

OTOH, I do notice it when my MBP is running Flash because it's about the only time the fans kick on. I'd be curious to see the effect on a fanless, battery dependent device like an iPod, iPhone, or iPad, but I suspect it would be noticeable.

Anyway, I don't think Steve Jobs needs to can Flash on OSX. I suspect it will die a more-or-less natural death over the next couple of years. Granted, Steve kind of put a pillow over its face, but I view it as Steve protecting the performance of his platform and products.

It can't if it's built into the browser! That means there is no separate process for Flash nor plug-in. When you download Chrome, you already have Flash in it, you go Youtube and everything works fine. Apple must block the whole Chrome to keep OS X anti-Flash if that will ever happen

I think the problem with flash is more of a hardware usage issue. iPad iPhone and iTouch way less power than a Mac, so on a Mac you can live with the problems inherent to Flash. I would also guess that taking something away is a lot different type of business decision than never offering it in the first place. iPad, iPhone, and iTouch users knew when they bought it no flash. And Apple has know for a long time that Flash causes problems on OS X from crash reports. There are a lot of technologies that we thought we couldn't live without and Apple tends to lead the way on leaving outdated technology behind as the release new products and Flash is one of them.

He's already made a stand. He blocks it from his world-leading stable of mobile devices, but did so because Flash impaired their functionality. He stood up and publicly stated what a problem Flash was for Macs, and he lobbied the WSJ and NYT to exclude Flash from any of their online products. Flash on desktops or devices that can be plugged in is less of a problem. Throwing down the gauntlet (after years of slapping Adobe around for their intransigence) is one thing. No need to drop a nuke yet, especially if what's been done so far has already put many nails in the Flash coffin.

This is Big Corporate stuff, not a soccer match. Steve has some responsibility to make smart business decisions for valid reasons.

And HTML5, currently, is CRAP. Properly genuinely crap. Quality of vids on Youtube is laughable.

Flash is utterly fine on Windows. It's just a Mac problem.

Flash has its uses. It may suck on OSX but it runs OK on Windows - and thats where most users are.

+1. I'm am actually almost regretting buying my MacBook, by the look of the way things are heading. Even some music studio's I work in have stopped buying Mac's and started using PC's, simply because of the silly computer politics that seems to be going on.
