If the 3g iPad had been released first...

Remember the iPhone now has 3GS 7.2Mbps while the iPad is just 3G. The iPad 3GS won't be out till next year.

3GS doesn't mean 7.2, that S is just there to differentiate iPhone 3G from 3GS due to some hardware improvements they made in 3GS (eg: more RAM) which makes the phone much quicker than 3G.

3G HSDPA means it supports 1.8, 3.6, 7.2, and 14mbps if your carrier supports it and iPad 3G has 7.2 mbps support just like 3GS

I tether to my 3GS all the time. The 3G experience with the iPad is fine and exactly what one would expect. Slightly slower download speeds. So it's fine for most of the internet which is not media heavy... but if you are looking to download lots of heavy media, it will be a process.

I've streamed Netflix at a reasonable quality.

At one point with a certain hack I was able to tether my netbook to my iphone and I was shocked at the speed err rendering. I had a little ah ha moment there when I saw the desktop browser utilizing 3g on the POS. It made me wonder if the the iPhone (working as a modem) was redoubling the signal in order to render a 'just a little slower' desktop browser experience. Either way though I am still getting the 3g. It reminds me of Hedburg's "Escalator Temperarily Stairs...Sorry for the convenience" joke. 'WiFi iPad Temperarily 3g'
