If the iPad is as restrictive as an iPhone it will fail!

With the iPhone, you can only copy music and movies from ** ONE ** computer. Period, done deal. If you want to copy music and movies from anywhere else, you have to erase your entire library. If they have this same restriction on the iPad, I predict an epic failure.

In addition, lack of USB support means you won't be able to copy anything to your iPad.

Lastly, if they do not allow you to DOWNLOAD files and save them to the iPad, then I would venture to say this thing is nothing more then a glorified paper weight.

I can understand all those limitations and restrictions on the iPhone. It's married to AT&T, to a contract, and they don't want you using it as a "computer", it's a phone. But many people are going to buy an iPad as their only computer, and if they are limited to how they can get files on their iPad, it's going to be an EPIC FAIL.

It boggles me, that no one else can see that the iPad will be Apple's biggest failure, I mean, no Mac OS X, no Xeon CPU, no 1TB SSD, no thought control.

The iPhone only syncs to one computer. That doesn't mean the iPhone/iPad cant download from other computers.

I feel so bad that you can't plug your device into your friends computer so you can steal the content he has.

Who is going to buy this as their only computer? I'd direct you to the device's specs where either a Mac of Windows PC is required.

i agree this type of functionality would make the iPad more useful to me. i have an iphone and all its application under one itunes username but the rest of my family also have usernames for their itunes' purchases. this essentially prohibits us from sharing any media. i know thats the design of the itunes ecosystem but how would you feel if you couldn't lend your mother or brother a dvd from your own collection because they technically didn't buy it? ipad is supposed to be a revolutionary device but in this case it doesn't even have the functionality of a dvd.

I'd be willing to bet that those folks who will use the iPad as their first and ONLY computer are not the kind who are able to download media and music from multiple sources anyway. They may have been at one time. Anyway, I don't care about that. What I'm talking about is all of the speculation before the release of the iPad. When people were all excited about the technology involved, now it's less than what their unrealistic dreams had conjured and that disappoints them. There are limits in the real world people. We can't have an OLED screen, completely open source software, and absolutely no DRM. All of this complaining just makes you look moronic. It's a complimentary device, it's not supposed to be your main computer, can you install whatever you want on a Palm Pre? No. And if Palm had fanboys they'd probably understand this.

1) You are aware that if you set your iPhone / iPod Touch to manually sync then no, you don't have to delete your content to get files from another iTunes install right?

2) You're still thinking in terms of files whereas the iPad uses a data / application model where the application itself handles the data. You never have to touch the file system and there are mechanisms built in to allow apps to handle data transfer for you.

3) Uh, what are you downloading to your computer at the moment other than applications? Sorry, what are you downloading LEGALLY to your computer at the moment other than applications? There, that's better. More to the point, what would you want to download to your iPad where the lack of ability to do this cripples you device?

While I don't agree with the policy, apple has been quite successful with it.
