I was surprised they didnt figure out the heat issue during testing/QA

I wonder if it was naivety or something else .........

An LED-backlit screen and improved graphics and I'll probably jump right in and buy one. A case redesign, with things like a magnetic latch and redesigned keyboard, in addition to the above and I'd definitely jump right in.

Anything less is just a maybe.

I just hope the 15'' is 1680x1050. My crappy 15.4'' Dell inspiron has a 1680x1050, so the apple should have it too. Especially with resolution independence coming in leopard.

I doubt much is going to change. I mean, the new LED displays are similar in function to the current displays, they just look better and draw less power. I'm not sure why this would require a case redesign. I think it's going to be odd having macbook pros with 3 different processors since it first came out (core duo, core2duo, santa ana)... It might be confusing for the consumers.

I doubt it will be confusing. Apple isn't selling Core Duos anymore, and Santa Rosa uses Core 2 Duos just like the current Napa Macbooks. Consumers are either tech savvy enough to know the difference, or they won't even care.

I do think the question here is as well by when will we see a really new Macbook Pro with a new design? Not that I don't like the current one but its coming into its age. On the other hand I cannot imagine a better design.

Is this the new equivalent of "first post!"

Anyway for me no. Not because I am not into rev. a or that the LED isn't appealing. I simply believe I will keep my rev d g4 pb until it dies and buy a mac pro in the next 8 months or so.
In other words, I do not need another notebook.

Yeah, I agree. Though the design is "old" (I mean by time), I would really be hard-pressed to come up with something more beautiful. I definitely see magnetic latch happening; maybe a modified keyboard, or even somehow getting rid of those thin grey plastic strips that run alongside the edges of the screen/base? But we'll see.

And yes, if there are indeed new LEDs and a modified case, I will be next in line to pick up a new MBP. I just pray it's won't be plagued like previous Rev. A models.

I don't think it requires a case redesign but I felt with a change so significant as a new type of screen technology that it might be a "good time" to change. I am just worried a possible redesign might screw things up lol.

new screen technology + upped specs + case redesign will be a rev.a with a big A

Will you jump right in or wait and see?

I for one will probably jump right in, but a bit worried if there are alot of changes. This might considered a REV. A, something I am weary of. But I have been waiting for this baby so long that another month of waiting for bug reports might just be a bit painful.

Interested in what you guys are thinking.

How many concurrent laptop 'whatif' threads do we need going?

LOL, you guys crack me up, reading through these posts, you almost get the impression that LED is revolutionary...NOT! I have seen Sony's 13" LED driven carbon laptop and I can most certainly say that it's crap. Its NOT brighter, the contrast sux, and the angles are constrained. Now SR, that's a different story although I dont see much of a performance gain from 137mhz in FSB with the current MBP. As for the discreet gfx chip we will probably see something new under the hood but don't bet on having the fastest one out there!
Just my 2 cents!

your the first post I have read that was a negative for LED technology.

On the other hand, there don't seem to be many people with first-hand experience of these displays on a laptops. On paper they seem significantly better than the current technology, but who really knows if they will be as good in practice? I'm waiting to see them first...

I like the concept and am looking to get a new computer for summer school so I probably would buy one unless the C2D refurbs drop lots in price then I would just get one of those.

Well I have tried it first hand and its inferior to my MBP display. I was kind of surprised because, with all the hype, I was really looking forward to seeing it with my own eyes. Maybe the new MBP will use a newer/better technology with their backlights, but if it is the same as what I saw on the Sony, there are a lot of ppl who are going to be very disappointed!

Have any manufacturers released products with the LED technology yet or was the Sony a prototype machine?

The Sony laptop I toyed around with was no prototype! I think viewsonic has some desktop displays with LED and Samsung/Sony have launched LED LCD TVs already!!!

now im going to have to drive my ass down to the nearest apple store to look instead of ordering site unseen.

Whoa, I am behind the times! Definitely not the first time nor will it be the last.

Well let's hope Apple gets some higher quality LED displays than Sony.

I'm struggling to see how this would be a rev A product, unless they change the case design majorly.

Slight refinement of the chassis, isn't major in my book, neither is a slight processort bump, new backlight ( from what I understand, the actual screen doesn't change, its only the backlight which is LED) and improved graphics (the thing I'm holding out for).

Santa Rosa is really just C2D rev.b, I think, so that isn't that big a deal.

I'll be picking one up as soon as I can when they are released, because, imo, unless there is a massive design changed, this is will be a rev C product.
