If the 6,1 wasn't acceptable to someone, I don't see why a 7,1 would be (assuming similar design). But I guess we'll see.

Yes, you have a fair point. But can't help thinking that 3 more years have now passed for the discontinued cMP. Most professionals should feel a bit nervous by now, owing a discontinued machine. They'll have to switch eventually. Time works against old machines, even if they were superior.

It appears that 6,1 is a standstill product meaning it can't evolve/upgrade to keep up with the current.

The big thing that allowed the cMP to appeal to a wider audience was its ability to enable thend user to configure it to suit their needs. If you only needed 1 CPU + 1 GPU it could do that. Need 1 CPU + 2 GPUs, it could do that. 2 CPUs + 1 GPU, or 2 CPUs + 2GPUs that too. The nMP gives one option 1 CPU + 2 GPUs(well 1 GPU and an expensive math co-processor).

The may as well rename the Mac Pro to "Mac Final Cut Pro X", and be done with it. If they brought back the ability to tailor the machine to what I want, I'd be in. For the record I'd like 2 x 4 core CPUs + 1 top tier GPU. If Apple did that I'd throw money at them.

Yes I know it isn't going to happen.

If the nnMP gave you a choice between a custom combination of 2-CPUs, 2-GPUs and 2-SSDs, I'd buy one in a minute, which is why it would never happen.
