Well, this may not be something that is really known for awhile. Apple could decide to announce new features early, but it is more likely we won't know for sure until iOS 4.2 launches in November and people can test it out in the real world. Of course my opinion on pre-orders is that while the ATV will be pretty popular in the beginning, I doubt they will sell out. I'm sure on launch day, or any other point after that you can walk into any Apple Store or Best Buy and pick one up.

The more I hear that people are already seeing many apps in iOS 4.2 beta support AirPlay, the more I want to dive in and pre-order! I may be patient enough to wait for more detail, though.

I sort of figure I can take advantage of the return policy if not.

The App itself will have to support Video Out for it to be streamed. For instance, MLB At Bat 2010 does not support video out to your TV should you use the cables (So, I've read). So the deveoper has to express that.

It's possible some TV Apps won't support it per content provider agreements.

But, yeah... IOS4.... Apps... very cool.... curious what jailbreak apps will come available. Interesting.

That is not true at all. Video out does not have to be supported for it to be streamed. MLB at Bat does not support video out however Airplay already works with it. If an app uses the iPhone's regular video player (like almost all do), Airplay works with it without the developer doing anything at all. Which means the overwhelming majority of apps with video now allow you to Airplay the video to your Apple TV.

Even apps like Air Video which use your computer to transcode non supported video files on the fly like .mkv files should work.

Yes, you should be able to watch mkv files on your big screen without converting first using the new Apple TV.

I hope you're right, but I think the quality and practicality of this remains to be seen.

Mac Air Video server (transcode) -> iPhone/iPad -> AppleTV.. that may be a bit too much, and the resulting quality will probably not be great. You also have to tie up your iPhone/iPad while you're watching the content on TV.

I would much rather stream directly from my Mac to my Apple TV (I don't even have iPhone/iPad).. But I don't know whether Apple will make AirPlay iOS capabilities available in MacOS (it would be awesome if they did).

If I'm able to watch avi files and whatnot on my iPhone 3GS through ZumoCast or AirVideo....will Apple TV be able to do this?

Or am I restricted to only what is in iTunes?
