At this point it's just unnecessary expense for the end user.

Since when has that bothered Apple any? They have a habit of pushing standards that they believe are better, even if they aren't yet widely adopted and device support is currently limited. Look at Firewire. Or... Thunderbolt.

I was being slightly trollish. But now that USB C thumb drives & cables are reasonably available there's really no reason not to switch. If you need to connect legacy equipment, adapters are cheap and if you're buying new there's little reason not to use the better connector.

Don't get me wrong, I agree to an extent.

A benefit would be better future proofing of an iMac when things that come out that require USB C.

But currently there is virtually no benefit to ALL USB C on an iMac IMO. A reasonable and obvious compromise would be Thunderbolt 3. So 2 USB C ports and 4 USB A ports.

At the end of the day its not a big deal for me. I'll just buy cables and/or adapters if required.

Because everything I own including my iPhone and iPad cables from Apple are USB-A. Obsolete is like a floppy disk. Though USB-C is superior, it isn't widely used thus USB-A is not obsolete.

Besides cables, what USB device has a fixed USB-A cable anyway? A thumb drive is about the only thing that has a fixed USB-A plug, and a decent $3.50 adapter is not a huge price to pay if you use one a lot. Nor does it add substantially to size of the thumb drive. Cables are simple replacements too.

Mouse, Keyboard, Xbox 360/One wireless adapter, USB speakers, Logitech wireless adapter and flash drive (as you said). And that's just the stuff I have lying on my desk in front of me.

I'm certain that the iMac connectors will match whatever the TB Display will have. A MBP can have only USB-C/TB3 because a lot of people will choose to just have a USB/TB Dock/Display for when they use it at their desk.

If I had to guess the iMac will have:
  • Ethernet
  • 4x USB-C/TB3
  • 2x USB-A
  • Audio In
  • Audio Out
Though I'm sure the counts for 4/2 could swap.

I had forgotten wireless mice and keyboards tended to have fixed cables. But Apple sells a wireless moue and keyboard. I don't see them supporting USB-A wired keyboards when they switch to USB-C. Apple TV competes with Xbox, so I don't see them caring about that either. I really don't see them supporting wired speakers of any kind (you should already be using BT ;-). I don't know what the Logitech wireless adapter is ...

For my own use on that list I am already there:

Magic Keyboard & Magic Trackpad, Apple TV, and Speakers via Apple TV. If I didn't have wireless peripherals, I'd use this as an excuse to buy them. I get gamers will not likely jump platforms to TV. But that's the breaks.

I do have a drawer full of USB thumb drives which I will have to buy about $30 worth of adapters to keep using, but this will also give me an excuse to get rid of the smaller capacity drives.

For my drives I'll have to replace a few USB 3 cables, and some micro and mini-USB cables, but again, it will also be an excuse to get rid of the older smaller drives and buy native USB-C drives. The biggest change will be Thunderbolt and Firewire 400/800 drives. I'll need new adapters for those -- hopefully just a simple and cheap Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt 3 converter.

Oh, and I will have to get an adapter for my DVD drive, though I'm suer Apple will be selling USB-C adapters going forward.
