Literally it’s the same crap every year.

Yeah we know Apple is greedy. The headphones are garbage, the power brick is slow. Apple will even nicke and dime you on iCloud (5GB).

But guess what, it doesn’t say Goodwill on the door, it says Apple. Or better yet, If consumers’ interests came first it should be called the FTC. But it’s not.

The reason they do this stuff is because people still buy their crap year in year out in record numbers. Best thing we can do from the comfort of our Magic Trackpads on our internet crusade is to NOT BUY their products.

I don’t think one single person on earth needs to be convinced that Apple products are expensive FFS.

It can also be said that if you don’t like it, don’t read it, right?

The phones have gone way up in price while hourly wages ( for those who earn in that manner ) have not.

I usually show up around here for a product launch to get a feel for things and then right about now, like day 3 when I have my new computer / phone etc I bail out for the rest of my 2-4 year upgrade cycle because most of what I read on here is full on time wasting BS.

I have my $1,350 phone, it seems to be totally fine so I am outta here.

Back to life folks, have fun!

The endless complaints on how this iPhone is too expensive in this forum.

You have the option of not reading or ignoring these types of complaints, do you not? Point is, you’re going to have to accept the [good with the bad] with any iPhone or hardware release with Apple. You will have those who praise the iPhone for everything it is and then you will have those who will nitpick every thing and feature about the iPhone. It is what it is. That’s how tech forums (Or any forum for that matter) operate as a whole.

So by your argument Apple could price a base model iPhone at $5000, if you don’t like it don’t buy it, am I right? Do you understand that it pushes other manufactures to price their devices equally as Apple? Not everyone is able to afford such high prices, so people will be left out of the smartphone market for such greedy pricing practices? Stop acting like Apples lawyer and open your eyes to the smartphone pricing to features ratio, you are paying ridiculous amounts of money for a phone.

True, but a phone is a luxury item not a necessity. The people complaining about price don’t need the phone, do they? I think the frustration in these threads comes from the fact that the people complaining about price are acting like they are entitled to the best features without having to pay for them. I don’t see forums where people are complaining about Rolexes being too expensive.

The point is the crazy high prices we are coming to, phones nowadays are actually a necessity and I don’t see a phone as a luxury item as a Rolex since it can be considered as fashion.

I would agree that the prices are high right now, and obviously I’d like to pay lower prices. But are they outrageous? I’d have to say no.

Think about it this way. The first iPhone launched at a price of about $500 IIRC. The XS is twice that. But look at what you get with the XS versus the the original. By any objective measure, it’s waaaay more than twice the phone for only twice the price. Additionally, another way to view this is to think about what $500 can get you today. You can get a OnePlus 6. Or an essential phone. Both of which are such superior phones to what the original iPhone was it’s just laughable.

MKBHD has said on several occasions that “cheap phones are getting good, and good phones are getting cheap”. We shouldn’t let the high end of the market blind us to the fact that there is more bang for your buck in the smartphone market than ever before.

Price isn’t the problem for me, and in Canada my XS Max 64GB + Silicon case + taxes was just over 1800$ CAD.

The problem is for that price I expect less bugs (charging, WiFi), and at least average RF performance.

This isn’t the norm for tech products, of course. The original Macintosh sold for $2,495 (~$5,877 in 2017 dollars). The cheapest iMac today is $1099.

The original iPhone was $499/666 4/8gb WITH a 2 year contract; thus that is the subsidized price at that. Which in 2018 money is $568/$758. Not exactly "cheap" for a 2 year contract subsidized phone. So in reality prices haven't increased much at all.

In fact this is about the same pricing as a XS/Max subsidized on 2 year from ATT (from another thread here) at $549/649 respectively for their 64gb versions.

While true about cheap phones, they are cheap for a reason (or few); you have to sacrifice something- poorer cameras/hardware, no water resistance, 1 tiny speaker, etc. They have caught up in some ways like pretty decent displays and some offering current year chips, but not all. Then comes the after-sale support. Where exactly are you going to bring your Hauwei or Xiaomi for warranty repair service or something breaks? Send it back to China? There's no Hauwei or Xiomi stores in North America to just walk into for help. There are other aspects beyond specs too people seem to easily forget.

You’re comparing cheap phones today versus expensive phones today. That’s not what I’m saying. Absolutely there is additional value added in buying a more expensive phone. That’s why so many of us have bought the XS, Max, Note 9 etc.

What I’m saying is that you can pay roughly an equivalent amount of money (actually less money according to your numbers) today and get more features than you did a decade ago. Each dollar you spend on a smartphone today gets you features that dwarf what that inflation adjusted dollar would have gotten you in the past.

I don’t really know too much about the evolution of macs (I’ve never owned one and outside of my work laptop I don’t really use a desktop/laptop day to day) so this might be ignorance on my part, but has the explosion in features and capabilities in Macs been similar to what it has been in iphones?

OMG, yes!! Find YouTube video of someone using an original Mac... you’ll be amazed.

But how many companies still offer the contracted rates? How many customers are informed they have a 2 year contract option on the table? At one point, I do remember $199-$249 was the 2 year contract price too. Most of the world is buying their phones outright.

I remember Galaxies were around $599, now $720 starting for the S9 regular. The Note 8 pushed the price up to near $1000.

The point was prices are similar at the end of the day. You were paying for the subsidy in your plan; there were no "free lunches" gift from the carrier. This is well known fact.

Whether you pay up front in full, monthly, or subsidized you are paying the MSRP phone price (absent any carrier deals, rebates, etc that doesn't count).

Take the iphone 4, sure the 32gb was $299 but the full price was $699. You were paying $699 at the end of the day whether you paid in full up front or subsidized when you could upgrade.

$699 in today 2018 money is more; $798.

So it wasn't "that cheap" considering the parts cost was likely less than a modern phone by a lot. Gross profit margins, cost merely to build vs selling price, were 59% for the iPhone 4. They are only in the 60s today (iPhone X was 64%), so it hasn't gone up THAT much, not as much as complainers want you to believe.

Apple simply isn't increasing prices to increase prices, not as much as people want you to believe by saying Apple rips people off, but because relative costs are increased too as their margins have only gone up 5% per device in 8 years.
