it is, after all, a phone. make do with the current ipod lineup or wait for the 6g ipod to come out.
hey man, I understand you must be annoyed because you want it for the iPod funtions, eh? Don't worry toooo much, if you've waited 6 mos for this thing to come out, I'll be you won't have to wait too much longer for the next iPod that might be very similar to the iPhone.

it says that right on the Apple iPhone page. it clearly states that a 2 year contract and activation fee are required for iPhone functionality, including the iPod. and i'm going to guess that if you terminate the contract, next time you sync with iTunes it'll probably disable the iPod functionality.
why would anyone pay all that money to use it just as an iPod anyway? seems like a waste to me.

$600 for an iPod...
Not to be mean, but I'm so sick of hearing from folks that just want it as an iPod - it's already a stretch to pay $600 for a phone - but to pay $600 for an 8gb iPod is rediculous.
If you've got that kind of money to blow - I know of a few charities that could put it to much better use.
I love new tech just as much as anybody - but I wouldn't be spending $600 just for an iPod - it would have to perform personal favors for me for that price...

you obviously haven't known about ipods very long.
they were originally $500 for a 10GB ipod.
You don't have to pay $60 a month for iPod and cell data.

When the original iPod was released, 10GB was a lot of storage. Today, 8GB is nothing and certainly not worth $600.
fine, how about paying $250 for an 8gb ipod nano....TODAY.
im pretty sure, phone, bluetooth, wifi, email, 3.5" multi-touch screen, video, coverflow, safari, youtube, google maps, and 2megapixel camera probably covers the additional $350....a$$

yes, that extra stuff is worth 350, but th OP is saying he doesn't want to pay to be able to use a majority of said features...so no in this case it's not worth it.
If I recall correctly, the 60GB iPod Photo was $600 when it first came out. Now certainly, 60 doesn't equal 8, but I just thought I'd throw that in there.

now that's a good point.
One question is what happens when you end-of-life the iPhone as a phone because, for example, you purchased a newer, bigger, better model? You still have a device that can make wifi connections and serve as an ipod, though a small one, especially at that future time .... any indication it needs to be an active phone then just to use its non-phone functions?
You have to remember you are purchasing a Phone first. If you are not in need of a cell phone replacement and just wan't to use the audio/features you should wait for the 6th generation iPod. I would think after 2 years the video/audio features would remain unlocked, even without service. This is one of the many questions that will be answered in the following days.
You missed the point. People also used to pay $300 dollars for PS1's when they came out.
The point is, if you just want to use it for iPod functions....buy an ipod for like 1/2 the price. No point in spending $658 just so you can use it for a ipod when there are ipods that perform the same functions for cheaper.

actually, there was both. A 5GB for $400 and a 10GB version for $500.
similar to a 4GB iphone for $499 and an 8GB iphone for $599

hahaha...glad to hear someone is in the same boat as me.....ps3, wii, 40inch lcd, 80GB G5 iPod, macbook pro...now I just need the iPhone and I will complete my collection. at least until new iMac's come out.
