If you had it to do over again, would you buy iPhone 1.0, or wait for the next genera

I had been thinking of buying an iPhone for myself and one as a birthday gift for my Dad. But after reading about all of the various problems, I'm not so sure. There are lots of reported issues in Apple discussions area, as well, without many fixes.

It seems like a lot would depend on how many of you are disappointed in comparison to the ease of use with their old cell phone, and how important it is in their daily lives. I would think that it would be a huge drag to switch carriers, only to find out that the iPhone is more expensive to use and is more unreliable.


1) If you had it to do over again, would you buy iPhone 1.0, or wait for the next generation?

2) What would you advise your best friend to do? What if they had to switch carriers?

3) If you could afford to, would you give one as a gift? Ditto on the carrier issue.
 
1.0 definitely has some kinks. The first model I had had broken wifi so I had to return it. Last night my calendar reminder went off and the alarm sound kept beeping with no way to turn it off.

But other than minor quirks, I love it. Plus Apple will just keep updating the software to make it even more bug free assuming the hardware doesn't die :p. (but that's what Apple Care is for!)
 
Every product is going to get complained about on these boards.

People that don't are using their toy/computer/iphone.


I'd buy it again. It has been more honestly useful the i imagined.
 
I would definitely buy it again, no question. I've also recommended to all my friends who have played with mine that they should switch from Verizon and get one too.

There is always gonna be another version, but right now I feel like the iPhone is the best smartphone on the market. You'd be missing out on actually having a "fun" cell phone if you waited till the next version.
 
I'd definitely buy it again. Easily the coolest electronic device I have ever bought, and that's saying a lot since I am an obsessive gadget buyer.

I paid the termination fee to get rid of T-Mobile and I now seem to get better coverage where I tend to go.

I'd recommend one for anyone who can afford it. And it would be a great gift, except for forcing someone to switch carriers and pay the fee. If you knew they were out of contract or planned on switching, then it would be fine in my opinion.
 
I too would also definitely buy it again, it is just so slick and easy to use. To think, I almost didn't buy it after playing with the keyboard, but now I love the keyboard more than the one I had on my Nokia E61.
 
i'd definately buy version 1 over again
it is so useful i love it i have wifi at my house and i swear im never on my computer anymore i love it
if your thinking about waiting for version 2 i dont think u should because no one knows what it will be like or even when it will come out, sure version 1 has some little problems but they can be fixed and i think it can only get better from here
so if your thinking about buying one now i would definately do it my iphone hasnt left my hand in the past week

1) I would do it a thousand times over. EVERY gadget has issues be it 1st gen or 5th gen. I can name a slew of problems with my 8525. Basically, I have waited for the perfect phone, and the iPhone comes close even at the 1st gen stage.


2) My friends gasped, "You paid $600 for a phone?!" so that should say enough. But if they were into gadgets, I'd just say that I am happy and ask what's important to them. If it's a hassle for a person to switch carriers, I can't say though. I was already with AT&T so it was a no-brainer.

3) Depends.

A: Nope, because the iPhone lacks a lot of features that people already have and find important, so they may not be as enthusiatic.

B: Yes if I could afford it because although my parents lack tech savvy, the iPhone is actually EASIER to use that existing phones. Everything pops up on the screen with colorful, huge buttons. It's probably the best phone for senior citizens.
 
Another "definitely buy again" here. There are problems to be sure, but I expect most of them to be fixed in software updates. Overall, the iPhone has exceeded my expectations, which is quite a feat because I had high hopes to start with.
 
Do it again in a heartbeat! Haven't been this happy with a "smartphone" ever.

I get to spend the time with this version and will upgrade if the next version has features that I feel I need.

2) Buy it!! Switch.

3) If I could afford it I give one to everyone I know.
 
I, also, would do it again. It's so beautiful and it really is a turning point in the history of 'convergence devices' and consumer electronics. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that?

Issues, sure. But like another person said, there's issues with everything, first gen. or otherwise. The point is that Apple can fix them relatively easily. Applecare for hardware (no RMA or mailing in for a new one, just go to the store) and iTunes for hardware. I remember what a hassle it was to flash the ROM on my PDAs (especially Palm, but HP had quite a horrible way of doing it). It's so easy to update software using iTunes and so easy to sync with it too.

I switched to a Mac hesitantly four years ago, just as I hesitantly switched to an iPhone. It was the best move ever. Now I've just bought a Macbook Pro and an iPhone, and I'd do it again. Even for $600 dollars.
 
Let me put it this way.
When Steve showed the iPhone at MW in January and I was reading the keynote streams I had my credit card out and ready to pay up to $999 for this beast.

6 months later, and into it for one week (coming from a Pearl) I am THRILLED.
FINALLY a "smart" phone that syncs seamlessly and well with my Macs.

Did not really need another iPod (have 8g nano and latest shuffle), but the widescreen is a nice touch. Watched "Pirates" the other day in the back yard just because a could - again widescreen is aweseome. Not thrilled with the headphones and my nice Ultimate Ears will not work either. The incl ones are just OK.

I just need to up my text messages to unlimited and then I'll be set.

For a 1st gen product it is pretty near perfect.
Yes, some glitches, but we must keep it in perspective.

I'm coming from a Blackberry 8800 and a Blackberry 8700 before that. I had planned on waiting for iPhone 2.0 but a friend of mine told me I'd walk out of the store if I played with it and he was right. I absolutely love it.

I was already an ATT customer and this actually makes my plan $20 cheaper.

The 8800 was great as long as I didn't turn the GPS on. Had to have it on the car charger to use the GPS and still have battery left over once I got to my destination hehe. Other than that I charged it once every 3 days with moderate talk/internet/email/other usage. Battery would normally be at 1/2 after 3 days.
 
I am a big NO - NO to first generation anything; well, I was.
I would totally buy again HANDS DOWN!!!!

The phone has excedeed my expectations and EDGE it's much better than the research I made. Altjough, there are a bunch of things to fix.

- LOUDER SPEAKER
- BETTER VOICEMAIL SOUND QUALITY
- TEXT COPY / PASTE
- LANDSCAPE KEYBOARD ON MAIL
- MULTIPLE PHOTO ATTACHMENTS
- PHOTO SAVE TO PHONE (from email)
