Hello,

Just wondering about this.
In a case where you have an iPad for content consumption, either videos or web browsing and not productivity, do you find that a big screen iPhone like the xs max or even the XR makes you not reach for your iPad any longer?

Cheers
The largest phone still has smaller screen than even the iPad mini. For content consumption, an iPad is still superior for comfort and enjoyment.

Of course, personally I prefer watching movies on my big screen TV. :D But that’s another thread.

I was given a normal sized iPad as a gift and after trying to like it for a month I finally gave it away. I didn't like using it. Too big. Too heavy. To unwieldy. Screen not as sharp as a Plus iPhone.
I'll never use an iPad ever again for anything. I enjoy movies on a Plus iPhone. Easy to hold it.
But then again, I reeeeeeeally don't like looking at blurry TV screens either.

I think that an iPad Mini (7.9” display) is the smallest device I’d watch any media longer than a short YouTube video on. Movies and television shows weren’t meant to be watched on a pocket sized screen. One of the many reasons why a big phone still can’t replace a tablet for me.

My phone is my primary device for communication, music, navigation, photography, and some other tasks when I’m out and about, but even an iPad Mini is better for web surfing and media.

This is the Xs max in comparison to the iPad mini. Yes

This says it all. Even the smallest iPad provides significantly more screen real estate than the latest iPhone. At the end of the day, a phone still has to be small enough to fit in most hands and pockets, while a tablet isn’t expected to.

Like others, I have an iPhone (SE) for when I’m out, and an iPad (mini) for when I’m home. When it comes to mobile devices, I always want the smallest device I feel I can get away with. So for me, large phones are out. But if that wasn’t the case, I think I could get by with just a big phone, no iPad mini. I mostly just read on the mini anyway, which I’m almost ok just reading on my SE. Video I pretty much only watch on my tv. I also have a 12.9 iPad Pro for completely different uses.

So yeah everybody is in a different situation and has different preferences. Lot of factors. I think it’s just something you have to think about or try for yourself.

For me it’s the other way around. I have an 8 plus and an iPP 11 inch with LTE, and I love throwing my iPad in my purse and having the big screen and keyboard so much that I plan on not upgrading my phone for a really long time and then when I do definitely not replacing it with a top of the line iPhone (whatever that is when the time comes).

I agree except i have a XR, i am done with home buttons.

Phone is for out and about only. With my 10.5 iPP, I never use the phone at home and I hardly ever use my 8" tablet anymore - I use either the iPad for consumption or my laptop or desktop for production.

I just got an iPhone XS Max to replace the Galaxy S7 Edge I was using when I wrote the above. I'll be using this phone a lot more the previous one - this is a huge upgrade in screen & performance. But the 10.5 iPP will still be my mainstay as a portable device at home.

I have the iPhone X, 9.7 iPad Pro and a Windows PC laptop.

I use my phone for checking emails, Facebook, MacRumors, YouTube videos and pretty much everything when on the go. Use the iPhone for paying bills. Also like the iPhone for scanning purposes and of course photos.

On the iPad, I use the Pencil for taking notes, pdf annotation (Notability is my all time favorite app) and the ASK when I need to do major typing. I also will use the iPad to watch Netflix and catch up on shows. If I need to use an Excel spreadsheet, I also will reach for the iPad or laptop. I don’t think I’ve ever used the camera on the iPad.

The laptop was a gift and is actually the least used of the three, as I’m semi retired.

I've been using my IPad so much and it so easy to carry that I have also stopped using my IPhone so much. When a replacement phone is required, I'll go with the smallest that Apple offers, a big change from my past practice.

I actually went from a Plus sized phone to the X. I like the portability of the smaller phone. It’s still comfortable for on the go checking emails, social media, listening to Podcasts, searching on Safari, maps, etc. However, I use my iPad for watching movies, Office suite for work and note taking.

I feel that's just too many devices. I use MacBook Pro and Iphone 8 plus and don't see any point of using an ipad, even though I have one in the drawer.
As a minimalist at heart, I feel you. I wish I didn’t have use for an iPad, but as it is I have/need two. Because I hate big phones when I’m out and about, I have an iPhone SE—but when I’m at home obviously it’s not great to read and surf on for long periods, so I have an iPad mini which is muuuch more ideal for that. If I could tolerate big phones I’d just make do with an iPhone plus/max and get rid of the mini and se. But I tried an iPhone plus for months and I simply can’t tolerate it. Also I draw a lot, sometimes for work, so I have a 12.9 iPad Pro. I need the big screen for drawing and occasional light laptop duties, but the size unfortunately makes it not good for long bouts of casual reading, so it can’t take over the iPad mini’s duties. In addition, I have a 15” mbp that I need mostly for work. If I didn’t draw and if I didn’t need a big hulking laptop for work, I’d be like you with just one light, smallish laptop (I assume yours is 13” mbp, but I might opt for the 12” mb or 13” mba) and one big phone. But as it is, I need 4 devices to cover my needs. :T But actually I still consider that minimalist, because it’s the minimum number of devices I can get away with to do (well) everything that’s important to me.

I've had the big iPhones since the 6 Plus, and I've never stopped using my iPad for content consumption. The big iPhone (now the XS Max) is for out and about usage, but the iPad is my couch/around the house/coffee shop device. I also take the iPad with me for note taking and just whenever I want that big screen for whatever (which is often). I love reading books on the big iPad.
