The Jailbreak for iPhone 3.1.3 is out and works perfectly. I just jailbroke my iPhone 3GS and downloaded the MiWi app. This app allows for tethering 3G to as many devices as I want. It basically turns my iPhone into a wireless 3G router, similiar to the MiWi broadband router from Verizon. This allowed me to buy the WiFi iPad instead of the 3G+WiFi, saving me $129 plus tax. Then, I no longer need to buy the $30 data package from AT&T because I'm just tethering my 3G connection from my iPhone 3GS to my WiFi iPad. That saved me over $700. (24 months of 3G at $30 per month plus taxes and fees) Also, as a bonus, I now can also give my MBP 3G internet, AND my girlfriends WiFi iPad 3G internet, unlimited, anywhere I want. This 3G is the exact same speed and connection that you would have if you paid for the 3G on the iPad through AT&T. If anyone wants directions on how to do this process I'll be more then happy to explain. Or if you have questions, lemme know. : )

I could see people buying the 3g to do the opposite. Use miwi on the ipad and now you have a 10hr mifi for under $30 a month (half the price of a real mifi and twice the battery).

FYI, not everyone with an ipad has an iphone.

You forgot "or don't have an iPhone".

What's the battery life on the iPhone when MiWi-ing?

My phone can barely go a full day as it is. Draining it down to be a wi-fi hot spot means I've basically trashed the concept of having a phone, unless of course I can tether myself to an electrical outlet or car charger.

My iPhone battery already runs down by the end of each day. The last thing I need to do is use it for tethering.

A lot of people would gladly trade the cost difference and monthly charge for the convenience and battery life.

Some people just don't want to jailbreak. Did you think of that?

I applied the Spirit JB yesterday to try the tethering and wasn't happy with the way it screwed with the rest of my phone, so I restored.

Well, or maybe we want good GPS with the iPad, or maybe we'll occasionally take trips where we won't be near a power source and want 3g for more than 2 hours.

I don't have an iPhone, so i can't discuss about that.
Nevertheless, i had a HTC Touch Diamond that i tethered to my macbook. The battery DRAINED in a couple of hours, making it useless as a phone and as a modem.

So, i sold my HTC Diamond, got myself a good old Nokia, and i'm waiting for the iPad 3G.
I understand the savings on tethering, but i don't think that much batteries can last for 9 hours.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Thanks for setting everyone straight. Any other life advice you can offer would be much appreciated since you seem to be so wise.

Also, please let us know which jailbreak app to run to make sure AT&T can't tell we're tethering, because if they do discover it, the bill will certainly be higher than the money "saved" by tethering.

Finally, let us all know what jailbreak app to run to magically prevent the iPhone battery from becoming depleted by tethering, as many people have decided on a 3G ipad to take some of the battery strain off of their iPhone.

you forgot:

or don't want the hassle of jailbreaking and carrying two devices
or goes abroad where the phone won't work and he/she can get a G3 sim for the ipad
or cuts the sim of the phone to micro size and uses G3 on the ipad for free
or has the company pay for it and doesn't care

Don't have an iphone. I'm on verizon. Don't have a droid, i have a standard env 3 with no data plan. I don't want a droid, don't wanna switch phone services.

I'm perfectly fine where I am with my 3G iPad.

** I wasn't charged tax or extra a fees when enabling 3G...just a flat out $29.99. I don't think I will be charged any taxes in the future.

** anyone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't own a smartphone and, now that I have an iPad 3G, I don't see a need for one.

Fair warning to anyone who does this: Just don't pull more than 5GB a month too quickly or they WILL find out.

ATT doesn't seem to mind what/how you use it as long as you aren't hogging a ton each month.

MiWi doesnt corrently work on the iPad, at least to my knowledge. And why would you stream data to iPhone when you already have data? Assuming your with AT&T. Without going to in depth, I don't quite see the point of doing it that way.

Second part, very true. I'm assuming you have both.

I can MiWi to my MBP and its fast enough to play WOW. And it lasted about 4 hours. I also have the Mophie Juicepack so my battery last around 8 hours. Plenty long enough for me.

It lasts much longer then 2 hours. Lol. True, but your saying that people would rather not jailbreak, then save over $900? Huh, interesting concept.

I like to think of myself as an honest person, but that has nothing at all to do with why I intend to buy a 3G iPad.
I don't want to be worrying about charge/charging of two devices, I don't want to be carrying two devices to accomplish what one device can do on it's own, I don't want to mess around jailbreaking...waiting/hoping for jailbreak updates, and I very much don't want to be labelled for whatever choices I make in life tyvfm.

Neil.

P.S I thought it was called MyWi? No?

Yep...honest.

In my opinion....note I said IN MY OPINION.....by thethering your iPhone to your iPad and using your iPhone data plan you are stealing. You are specifically paying for a DATA PLAN FOR iPhone and not just a DATA PLAN FOR RANDOM GADGET I FEEL LIKE USING TO STEAL SERVICE FROM at&t.

Do I wish I could have one plan that covers both devices....damn straight....but I'm not going to steal because that plan doesn't exist.

Steps off of soap box....goes back to eating nummy shrimp Lo Mein.

Since were assuming... Why would anyone want an iphone and an ipad. My blackberry tour is way better at messaging and email then the iphone, the ipad is better then the iphone at everything else. Blackberry is also a better handset, gets better batterylife, has a physical keyboard, allows for multitasking so I can do msn, google, aim, and pandora.

I belive i read a post where miwi does in fact work with the ipad and if not im sure it will shortly. So frankly you must be ignorant if your going to keep you iphone, you'll save WAY MORE MONEY not having to buy an iphone plan plus messaging plus internet.

You had to start a whole new thread to say that? there's already a handful of threads just on the first page alone discussing tethering the iPad..

And what about individuals who surf with the iPad on a continuous basis? because I have MiWi installed and I use it sparingly and it still kills my iPhone battery...

Soon your reply won't be valid!

I have zero use for mobile data without gps. Maps is the only consumer of 3g data for me

In my opinion, the physical keyboard is the reason NOT to buy the blackberry.

Why can't people accept that everyone has different needs and will buy different gadgets.

Come on now... I have the Tour, and it's awful. Ever try scrolling through a large email or document? No matter how you might justify it to yourself, the Tour cannot even be considered in the same category as an iPhone. The BB app store is a joke--full of buggy overpriced applications.

I agree that not everyone wants an iPhone, but please do not compare a Tour to an iPhone, let alone claim it does anything better.

That was my point exactly... My needs and opinions are not the same as yours, OP seems to be the only one in the thread that doesn't realize this.
