Come on now... I have the Tour, and it's awful. Ever try scrolling through a large email or document? No matter how you might justify it to yourself, the Tour cannot even be considered in the same category as an iPhone. The BB app store is a joke--full of buggy overpriced applications.

I agree that not everyone wants an iPhone, but please do not compare a Tour to an iPhone, let alone claim it does anything better.

Well.. It does have a physical keyboard :p

So let me get this straight. You justify nearly $100 a month for two years, plus having to keep another device charged over the 3G?

I'm in my car. iPad mounted. It's a beautiful gps. I'm not ignorant. $30 a month is a great deal.

The iPhone's 3G plan is capped at 5GB of data. So once you start streaming data to your laptop and your iPad, you'll run out of this quickly and have a nice big bill from ATT. The 3G iPad has a (truly) unlimited data plan.

And Verizon's device is a MiFi, not miwi. It works perfectly on an iPad. All it is is a wireless access point with a wifi signal.

I reject your claim that I am not honest.
By tethering my phone, I am using the data plan that I pay for.
I am not browsing on the phone and the iPad/Mac at the same time, I am using one data connection.
Every other phone out there allows tethering, just because AT&T is trying to find a way to make more money from it makes me dishonest?

Now, if I set up my phone as a router and let everyone at the poolside within range use it for free internet, then yes, that is stealing.

But if I am staying at a hotel for a couple of days without wifi or an airport, I should use my ISP as I want.

The Jailbreak for iPhone 3.1.3 is out and works perfectly. I just jailbroke my iPhone 3GS and downloaded the MiWi app. This app allows for tethering 3G to as many devices as I want. It basically turns my iPhone into a wireless 3G router, similiar to the MiWi broadband router from Verizon. This allowed me to buy the WiFi iPad instead of the 3G+WiFi, saving me $129 plus tax. Then, I no longer need to buy the $30 data package from AT&T because I'm just tethering my 3G connection from my iPhone 3GS to my WiFi iPad. That saved me over $700. (24 months of 3G at $30 per month plus taxes and fees) Also, as a bonus, I now can also give my MBP 3G internet, AND my girlfriends WiFi iPad 3G internet, unlimited, anywhere I want. This 3G is the exact same speed and connection that you would have if you paid for the 3G on the iPad through AT&T. If anyone wants directions on how to do this process I'll be more then happy to explain. Or if you have questions, lemme know. : )

I thought long and hard about this, in fact using MiWi is exactly how I was getting data on my ipad when not in a wifi zone. The HUGE problem I see is that using MiWi drains the living crap out of my iphone's battery. I need my iphone for important phone calls and weird stuff like that. If I occasionally need to get something off the net yeah I'll use MiWi all day long (well not literally). But if I need to browse for a couple of hours or if I need to stream music or video then it's just not going to work.

This post is a waste of TCP packets and bandwidth.

And what's with the name-calling? Maybe to make up for the lack of something.

I'm perfectly happy with my 3G iPad. And guess what?

I tether my jailbroken iPhone 3GS to my jailbroken iPad Wifi+3G. SHOCKER Huh? sheesh.

I decided to pay the $130 as a fail-safe. Security, if you will. For that worst case senario... like... Not using the 4G iPhone because no tether or jailbreak is available.

So I'm stuck with old hardware just to tether? Waiting for a 4G iPhone tether/jailbreak? Hell no. I have the dough to pay extra for a feature I may not need. It's not going to hurt me.

Come to think about it, I don't even need an iPad. Who does?

It's a luxury item. I pay for the luxury.

But if you then start to rely on mywi on your iPhone for Internet on your iPad, you are restricted to using the same operating system and avoiding updates.

I love mywi, but it's a stop gap solution for me untilthey release the iPad to the uk/Ireland.

I will want to upgrade my iPhone to OS4, and If 3.1.3 is anything to go byit will take months before another jailbreak will be available.

I agree that not everyone wants an iPhone, but please do not compare a Tour to an iPhone, let alone claim it does anything better.

lol, to each his own. I wouldn't start a thread that says my Tour is better then the iPhone... but frankly for me it is.

Fair enough. I began using the Tour after I fell off my boat with my iPhone in my pocket. I've cursed this thing since that day.

Exactly. That is one valid reason for wanting a 3G iPad. Even if you use MyWi now, it is good in my opinion to always have the option to also use the 3G that the iPad has. Why restrict yourself over $130?

I got a 3G unit because:

1. I don't want to jailbreak my iPhone. I want to be able to get updates as they happen and not have to worry about the battery or the risk of getting caught WHILE I STILL HAVE THE IPHONE because

2. I am ditching the iPhone when my contract runs out. It seems like a joke device after having the iPad. Using apps and browsing the net (which is 80% of what I do with my iPhone) is now inconvenient and avoided by me at all costs.

3. I do not plan to pay for unlimited 3G each month. Even with all my net browsing I haven't gone over 250MB on my iPhone since last November, six months ago. I am either using my own wifi at home or the one at work. In fact, as I've been home since Friday I have yet to even turn on my 3G service. But it's there when/if I need it. I like that.

4. I do believe using the iPhone with MiWi is against AT&T's and Apple's policy so it is a form of stealing. Someone read the fine print--I bet it's in there. I also believe they will crack down on abusers. Your days are numbered.

5. I can afford it. But in the long run, if my usage stays the same and when I get rid of my iPhone I may actually save money. It's possible but even if it's just a wash or slightly more...again, I can afford it.

There are other minor reasons but those are the major ones.

ETA: selling my 3GS may actually pay for the $130 price difference in iPad units, but I may just keep it as an iPod.

Just jail broken my phone and downloaded Mywi and got it working in minutes. What a brilliant app. Got it connected to my MBP and download speeds were really good. This will be great when I am out and about with my MBP or iPad and can't get Wifi connection. Yes the 3G iPad would be good but having to buy an additional data bundle is a pain when you are paying for it on your iPhone. In all reality you wouldn't use it for downloading massive amounts as the speed to far far slower then broadband. Can't see how it hurts the network provider as if I wasn't doing it on my iPad then I would just be downloading the same stuff but on the smaller screened iPhone, same data download.

Anyway I know there are lots of you that think that this is a lame app but all I would say is try it first as I think it is brilliant.

Oh, jail breaking you iPhone, how easy is that....!!!

I love that logic. Let's see if this works.

"I am going to steal Windows Sever 2008 R2 Enterprise/Snow Leopard Server for all of my boxes. Every Linux distribution can do that functionality, just because MS/Apple are trying to find a way to make more money from it makes me dishonest?"

The iPad has much better 3G signal, not to mention battery life than the iPhone. I do need my iPhone to work as a phone.

I find the 3G is easy to use and it's convenient. To safe money, I just put in my iPhone microSIM card.

I wonder about the security risks of jailbreaking a phone or ipad. Would it allow someone to upload a virus or spybot?

I have zero use for mobile data without gps. Maps is the only consumer of 3g data for me

In my opinion, the physical keyboard is the reason NOT to buy the blackberry.

Why can't people accept that everyone has different needs and will buy different gadgets.

Exactly.

i don't have iphone, and i'm using e72 as wifi rounter to share 3g connection. It's HSDPA 14.4Mb and the battery is super super strong :) I can easily replace one if the battery is out.

I love your logic.

I am stealing something that I am paying for.

Using your analogy, I would be completely uninstalling and reinstalling that server on each box, something that is perfectly legal to do.
As long as it isn't being run on more then one machine.
Get it?
What else you got???

I'm considering using my iPad as a WiFi hotspot and tethering my WiFi enabled cell phone to it :D

Not every one will be paying for unlimited data plan package every month. Some will just be paying for data as and when needed. I love how some folks who criticize the 3G option just automatically add on the $30 charge every month like it's written in stone that it must be done that way!
