Just rubs in a little bit of my current experience here.
I have “accidentally”(-_-) inherited 100+ tabs I opened on my iPad safari to my M1 MacBook Pro. Now the cpu is at 40% minimum usage 7*24 and machine can physically feel warm (70 Celsius). Plus I have like 13 apps opening, 8 of which I use here and there actively. Does machine feel slow? Kinda. Enough to stress me out? Maybe. Is M1 as powerful as many people here and YouTuber trying so desperately to convince me otherwise? No.
However, will I upgrade to M2 Pro/Max? Probably no. Apple will add more dedicated hardware that doesn’t help alleviating my CPU usage situation, and none of my current work benefits from media engine, neural engine and that sort of stuff. Even if M2 can have, let’s say, 30% performance jump in GeekBench, I would still not necessarily feel the difference in performance. I know how easy people can get themselves tunnel visioned into, and how dangerous it can be. Missing the full picture is very common these days, unfortunately making them easier to be manipulated. But that’s the story for another time.
Stop obsessing over "benchmarks".
So true. That’s just a number, and I bet 99% of the people don’t even bother to read GeekBench’s blog post About what those benchmarks are all about.
The benchmark obsession is rather foolish. I have a MBP M1 Max 24core 14" and it is by the far the best machine I have ever had. It runs insanely well. I've yet to throw anything at it that has made it stutter. A machine that has ~12% single core and ~20% multicore improvement might look nice on paper, but it's hardly going to be something I notice in day to day. If you have an M1X machine, you already have an amazing machine - you don't need an M2X machine. If you're stuck on an Intel machine, then sure, make the cost/performance decision to upgrade.
I second to this. Unless there’s some groundbreaking breakthrough enabling 3x performance skyrocket I don’t see any reason to worry about.
Benchmarks are the equivalent of waving a male appendix.
inappropriately and obsessively might I add.

This is one thing I’ve never understood. I’ve seen so many people here talk about benchmarks, but when you ask them what they’re actually going to use the computer for they either don’t answer or it’s for some simple task like web browsing.

You’re not going to notice the difference browsing the web on a M1 versus an M3 Ultra Pro Uber Max Extra 😂. If your hobby is eking out high scores in benchmarks, then get something you can tinker with and build a PC.
Ain't this the truth. I can tell you my ancient Mac Pro browses the web and writes school documents just as well as my M1 Air.

I use the M1 in the summer when I don't want the heat, and the Mac Pro in the winter when my room gets cold. It's a great arrangement.

For me the main reason to wait for M2 is the same as always: first gen Apple products categorically have problems. While performancewise M1 vs M2 is going to be negligible, there might be enough internal changes that they fix some problems you might run into on M1.

I currently have a 2019 16" Intel MBP for work and I can do absolutely nothing about it getting noisy by just connecting a 4K display other than enabling low power mode. Which is not an option as I actually do need its CPU performance too. I can't wait for M2 to be released so I can ask my employer to get me one.

The things I am hoping Apple would fix for M2 are fairly simple ones: the very ****** pixel response times of the laptop display and HDMI 2.1 support. With M2 being a fairly pedestrian performance update at least for CPU, maybe increased GPU performance is on the table or just a better overall feature set.

People obsess over computer benchmarks the same way others obsess over horsepower and acceleration numbers in cars. In the real world on public roads those things are totally meaningless.

I get people coming in focussed on having an i5 or i7 over an i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 or 5 without even knowing what it means. They were just told it was ”better,” but can’t actually explain why. When you hear how so many people actually use their computers a current or recent generation i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD is totally sufficient for their needs. Yeah an i5, i7, Ryzen 5 or 7 is ”better,” but in many instances of how they use the device they will likely not notice much if any difference.

It’s like wanting a sportscar for a run to get milk at the corner store.

It's probably going to be a " you get what you pay for" difference. 10-18% speed increase for 15-20% price increase (more if you get a good deal on the M1).

If you need that 10%, get the M2, but in my experience, even if you have the occasional a 10-20 hour render running over night, it won't really matter if it's 11-22hours.

New user here, thank god I found this thread!

Should I buy the M1 Pro, og wait for the M2 pro????????????
m2 pro/max won't really offer that much performance compared to intel going to m1, and will most likely be msrp with no discount, m1 pro currently is 400 off on amazon if you are state side.

I wanted to say this but figured I shouldn’t… So it’s like the nerd version of a lifted pickup truck 😂
I think they meant appendage, but the thought of someone waving a male appendix around is freaking hilarious. (Appendix is that thing inside you that can burst causing extreme pain, appendage is your joystick)

The best part of this purchase was buying for credit card rewards points instead of actual money. Bank's rewards store gives special prices for buying with points. And Iphone 14 256GB from the same store is due to be delivered soon.

I have a 16" MBP M1Pro w/ 32 GB RAM, 1TB SSD. My daily driver prior was a 2016 13" MBP w/ Touch Bar, which was a hell of an upgrade. I do however agree with these year to year updates being incremental at best. It's fascinating what different communities focus on. I personally could not imagine any additional performance needs for my day to day / work usage. The only real reason I would look at benchmarks at this point would be for gaming and unfortunately Apple is so far behind in this arena. If only they would allow us to have Bootcamp again....
