No airport card installed. I went to the local (service) Mac store (after calling ahead about SO Dimm that would fit this (that) machine) and they said they had none instock, SO Dimm 133 that would fit "that" machine.

I squiggled the mouse on the iMac tonight and the message:

"UniNEnet: 0 0 UniNEnet::putToSleep - turned off cell clock!!!"
came up.

Why can't a ten year old machine running a ten year old operating system record ten year old music?

it appears that (looking @ my e-mail alerts) I've got the winning bid on the OS X.4 offered in an earlier reply!!!!!

That error (and the circumstances it occurs under) are giving me a sinking feeling. :(

And, it CAN record music, but not without a little more expense. :(

On the flip-side, congratulations on winning the 10.4.6 disc!

dead blue screen went away

OK,
Finally got the cd to eject by pulling the power cord and restarting. it tryed to boot from Mac os 10 install. quit install and the disc ejected
running OS 9.2.2 until the new RAM and OS arrive.

A little trick that works on most if not all Macs. Hold down the mouse button when you turn the machine on until the CD ejects, then release the mouse button. ;)

Yup. Looks like a 10.1.4 set mixed with a 10.1.5 set. :(

If you get a later OS, as recommended by others, get Tiger (MacOS 10.4). Make sure it's a RETAIL Disc. It will be black.

Here's one on eBay. The final 10.4 Retail DVD (10.4.6)

You should check that your iMac has a DVD drive since one model only had a CDRW drive. The drives are standard 5 1/4" Optical Drives (PATA Interface).

Upgrading the RAM in these isn't terribly easy if you need to upgrade the internal module. They have a 168Pin full size DIMM internally (difficult) and an SO-DIMM slot under the bottom plate (easy).

recieved the disc today:
"Mac OS X Tiger
Includes Xcode 2
Install DVD
Version 10.4.6
2Z691-5811-A"

Ready to install....I put the machine to sleep the last few days and again the dvd drive refused to open, did the restart 'hold the mouse down' to make the drawer eject. SD 133 512 RAM (user slot) is bid on, iwill win, i will win...soon to come....
I'm goin' in!!!!

i got nothing, put the cd in and it doesn't even show on the desk top. ****,****.****!!!!
i dicked around to try to open cd inc. restart, blah blah, etc and the cd doesn't start. spin alittle spin a little & nothing!!

Oh dear.

:(

I'm wondering if this model doesn't have a DVD drive but instead is a CD ONLY drive, or, it IS a DVD drive that has trouble reading DVDs.

OK, so you have OS 9. Go to the 'Apple Menu' (top left of screen). And select "Apple System Profiler".

Next, click on "Devices & Volumes" tab.

Listed there will be USB devices, your internal Hard Drive and your optical drive. What does it list?

OS 10.1.5 running (finally)

I will search for the information you requested, sorry for my tone of voice (it might have been the beer) :(

ata device atapi
device serial not available
device 2.3d
Product CD-RW CRX170E
Vender Sony

No DVD capability in that iMac...

Bummer. :(

That drive would do the trick INTERNALLY, but I'll warn you, getting inside a G4 iMac is not something that is terribly easy and unless you have heat transfer compound handy is NOT RECOMMENDED.

Internally you do need a ATAPI (aka PATA or IDE) type optical drive (not SATA), so that drive would work and according to OWC it works natively with 10.4.3 or later (though dual layer burning would require third party burning software).

If you know somebody who has an external USB (or better yet FireWire) interfaced DVD drive, you could try that. Be warned that USB booting and installing would be SLOW since this iMac is only 'USB 1'.

If you'd rather get an external and don't want just a slow USB 1, then if OWC has good freight costs to you then this external would be the choice:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/MRF82SD22LS/

It also works "natively" with 10.4.3 or later and at least it DOES have USB, eSata, FW400 & FW800 so it's reasonably future proof (for now anyway).

As far as pricing goes, these seem quite reasonable (unless anybody can show otherwise) and if I wasn't in Australia, I think I'd be buying that external with all those interfaces. :(

EDIT: remember, you're STILL going to need an audio interface and we could still place a question mark over the internal RAM size (with above internal access caveat) and the condition and capacity of the hard drive. I'm simply recalling that you didn't want to spend much on this project.

I'm going in!

picked up the SuperDrive mentioned here earlier and 512 internall RAM, 512 installed so far on the external.

I'm reminded of the lines in "Spinal Tap" where the interviewer is asking about the guitarist's '57 Les Paul: "Don't touch it! Don't even look at it!"

The machine was built by a mere human, and the technicions are mere humans, I think I meet basic requirements.....

Now, to go hunting for Logic Pro.....

greetings from super iLamp, ta da!

I need to change my signature to:
Mac OS X
version 10.4.11
700 mhz
1 GB SDRAM

it's working!
few problems with installation: I tore off a portion of a fingernail trying to pry apart some data cables (ow), the little jumper in the back of the dvd was in the wrong position and the boot sequence (??) got funny. Otherwise, it is a complete success and I have everyone here to thank for it!!
