You have a link to that deliberate design decision? "Probably"? Sounds like you're guessing.

Even if true it looks bad. They spent 3 billion on an app and got all these music and TV deals and then they can't add an Airplay button?

You keep saying that, but, they didn't pay 3B just for an app. They also got a headphone business that made over 1B in profits last year and commands 60% market share for headphones over $100.

Yeah, you're talking about doing it from your iOS device, to one AirPlay receiver (your AppleTV.)

OP was talking about doing it from iTunes on his computer.

Maybe I'm missing something too. At this moment, I'm listening to Beats 1 through my audio system via my Apple TV, Beats 1 is playing in iTunes on my MacBook Pro. In Sound under System Preferences my Apple TV appears as an audio output device. I redirected the sound to Apple TV. I can even control the volume from my MacBook via iTunes or System Preferences-Sound.

If you go into iTunes and play Beats 1 the AirPlay control disappears. without the control you can't stream to multiple devices at once. Once you choose any other source the control reappears.

You keep coming back to the 3 billion they spent. You're aware that Beats 1 was not a part of Beats Music and therefore not a part of that purchase, right? If anything, it's Jimmy Iovine and all the DJ's salaries that they're putting money in to for Beats 1. Use the workarounds and get off your cross about it.

On my iPad, it takes some time for the Airplay icon to load. Sometimes like ten or twenty seconds. Like most of the bugs in Apple Music, this seems like another bug that reacts bad at some slow connection or bottleneck in the system. There's like zero flow and a lot of lagging and bugs. Streaming a song or Beats1 without problems seems to be a problem while streaming full HD from Youtube with good audio works perfect. Strange...

Considering it's over a year later now, a new version of iTunes, and the Airplay option still disappears when you play Beats 1, it sure doesn't look like an accident. But I can't for the life of me understand why they would do this.

some sort of licensing issues (or just a "cover their a$$" sort of thing in that regard.)

I wonder if it's because of the litany of software available on PC/Mac that would allow you to capture the stream and pirate the material? A lot of new songs are being debuted on Beats 1 and I would imagine that presents a problem. Not sure if such software exists on iOS, which if it does defeats my theory. But that's my best guess as to why you can on iOS but not in iTunes proper.

Except removing the ability to AirPlay the stream has no impact on the ability to capture and record it. There are lots of OS X apps out there allow you to record anything the Mac's playing, from any app. Even iTunes playing Beats 1.

Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil also works around this strange restriction and lets you AirPlay it too.
