I'm still likely to stay with Spotify for the reasons I mentioned above but I haven't fully made up my mind yet.

I'm a bit curious though. On the Apple information linked, it says that no original files will be altered.

Can I take from all this and the discussion above that I use another player ( I use Roon ) on my main Mac music computer for these files ripped from CDs then I'd be good to go as usual, even if I additionally use with iCloud sharing on to listen to streaming music on that Mac sometimes?

Also, if I use another player on the iPhone other than Music to play my own files they will output at full resolution when using wired headphones.

I see why Apple has done what its done and it makes sense to me and in truth I'm not that bothered if I only have AAF files available on my iPhone. A major issue is that I wouldn't want to mess up my main library of full - res stuff that I play on my hi if at home. I keep hearing fears that it will interfere with my own files. I could cope with the AAC cloud stuff being a bit messed up cover art etc but couldn't take the risk of my own files being altered in any way.

How about if I ran a separate HDD with the music in that running my iTunes library and then I could keep another HDD for Roon playback and this would make sure AM didn't corrupt any of my own files. Does this make sense as the best way to be sure?

It seems like this should obviously work but I'm just a bit paranoid about AM's quirks and I spend months and months and months ripping and cataloguing my CDs and need to be sure
