I'm done with Apple... for now.

So tired of the waiting game only to be disappointed. I've been using iPhone since the iPhone 3g, skipped the 3gs and got the iPhone 4 only to return it because of the 'antennagate' issue (yes, it affected me). So I had to use my outdated iPhone 3g for another year while I wait for Apple to get their **** together with the antennagate with the iPhone 4s. Then came the iPhone 5 with the bigger screen, sold my 4s and been using the 5 for the past year. I was really hoping Apple would step up its game this year and make a bigger screen to compete with Samsung, but it doesn't appear so and they will release the 5s with the same screen size as the 5.

The real disadvantage of apple is the company releases a phone once every year, and you have to wait 2 years for a redesign phone while samsung is running circles around you making all sorts of sizes for the market to choose. So for now, I'm done with apple. I'm looking into getting the Note 3 when it comes out for the screen size, this will be a good opportunity for me to check out android too for the first time. This is where you really messed up apple, because I might end up loving android and not come back to IOS when/if you do release a bigger screen size next year.

I tried Android for the first time this year as well.

It's nice. Doesn't tickle my fancy, but I like it. Use a GS4 currently as my everyday, personal device. Still have my iPhone 5 for work and will hopefully be picking up the 5S.

Each OS has its flaws and advantages. The bigger screen is nice (went from a Nexus 4 to an HTC One now to a GS4) but I do like the size of my iPhone 5 quite a bit.

Just depends on what you want to do. My use case doesn't change from device to device. I've gotten used to the ways each OS does certain tasks so most things are easy for me on both and the annoyances I do experience are relatively minor.

I like having both in my everyday tech lineup. I find I gain perspective from using both - though many here don't want to hear perspective, they want to hear cheer-leading for their side.

Pick up an Android phone. You aren't offending Apple. If you like it, more power to you - though I'd venture to guess in a year or so you'll start getting bored again. Just the way society seems to be heading - faster upgrade times, more specs, more features (when most of us don't use half the stuff there anyways).

The new, shiny thing always looks good from afar and is fun for a time. But the grass isn't ALWAYS greener....

Then again, you won't know unless you try it.

This. Pretty much any flagship smartphone is decent these days. If I were you I would give android a try, it might seem strange at first but then you will be used to it. I didn't find it that difficult to go to android so don't let that affect what you want to choose.

agreed, apple should also make a bigger iphone. samsung and htc are really stepping up the game, and the big hefty marketing budget of samsung makes sure that you know about their device. i'm also done with apple and waiting for the GS5.

I think Apple will offer a larger display next year.

Though I also agree that we've hit the screen size wall.....the Mega is an absolute joke as a phone - and devices like the Note, however great they are, sales-wise are still niche devices.

The middle ground that we'll settle at is 4.5" - 5" keeping the overall size of the device down as small as possible. IMO the GS4 has done this superbly. I don't feel like I'm using a massive device because they keep the overall footprint very trim.

To that point, there are plenty of people who would run to a larger iPhone. There are also MANY who prefer the 4" (and even the 3.5") sizes. Because of this, Apple will release a larger iPhone 6 next year.

Each updated yearly. I actually hope they do this. Offers options (in order to maximize marketshare) while keeping the line trim and efficient (so they don't turn into Samsung).

Well, I don't know about that.... My wife recently ditched her iPhone 4s for a Galaxy S4 Active and even so she's not that familiar with Android, when I offered that she could have my iPhone 5 after September 10 she passed.

She said it would be hard for her to go back to the small screen.

Yup, I'm actually gonna pick up a nexus 4 soon but I'm still not sure if I should wait for the next gen. release. For my needs, I think it's more than capable and I don't want to be tied to a contract and feel all the high-end phones are overpriced (not willing to spend more than 400 bucks on a phone). You know WHY some people say they prefer the 3.5" or 4" screens? Because they've never had a choice. I would be willing to bet just about anything, if you handed someone a 3.5" iPhone or 4" iPhone and then handed them a 5" iPhone and said choose...conservatively I'd say 75-80% would choose the larger screen. Conservatively.

Remember the posts last year when it became apparent that Apple was enlarging the screen on the upcoming iPhone 5? Remember all those people who were screaming and crying that they didn't want some huge screen...that 3.5" was the perfect size? Here we are a year later, and I'll guarantee you most of those people are now using the iPhone 5 or will be using the 5S shortly. You don't hear them griping now, do you? Why? Because they got a choice and they chose to move to the larger screened phone.

Screens are getting bigger...people (in general) like that...some of you need to realize it and move on.

Most people I know don't 'prefer' the size, they just got used to it. Like you get used to bigger phones eventually, you just have to try it.

And you're probably right...it's probably more of an "adapt" thing rather than a "choose" thing. And I'm sure I'm biased by my own like of bigger screens. But I really believe if Apple wants to maintain the huge base they've got, they need to up the screen size, even if it's just a little at a time. I know it will cause fragmentation, but at some point, larger screens are going to reach saturation and people in general are going to expect them. That's when Apple, with it's "this is what you want" mentality is going to find trouble.

I'll somewhat agree.

I don't think fragmentation will be a huge issue. I figured it out at one point, but the doubling of the current iPhone 5 resolution in a 4.7" display would yield a PPI roughly the same as the GS4 and HTC One.

From there it would be similar to what devs did for the retina iPad apps - doubling the scaling. Not too difficult.

I like this post. Good to have both OS's and give a good personal view whether good or bad, I enjoy the perspective you give JR, I don't always agree, (It would be pretty boring world if we all did ) but I respect your opinions from your user point of view, and enjoy reading them.

I have both an iPhone 5 (personal phone) and a Galaxy S III (work phone, but we are welcome to use it as our personal phone as well).

My GS3 sits plugged in on my desk. I use it for outbound calls, but my phone calls, texts and emails are forwarded to my iPhone. Why?

• The iPhone's battery life is superior
• The app quality in iOS is better IMHO
• The iPhone fits better in my digital universe (Apple TV, MacBook, iPads)

To me there just isn't a good usage case for a drastically larger screen, especially when I have an iPad mini.

I am using my 4s for 8 months now and recently helped my GF to choose an Android phone (S2, it's a good bang for the bucks here in Macedonia) and if I were to choose NOW after using the bigger screen, I would go with the S2.

The bigger screen just makes it more fun and attractive to use it. I'm a tech geek, not a screen lover, but the 4s screen feels so small now.

I would wait to see what will Apple present in September (software and hardware wise). If that's not good enough for my needs... welcome Android.
iOS 7 feels nice, but let's wait and see what the GM will bring. I think that an iOS with a 4.5 inch iPhone will be a HIT, but that's just me
