I think others have eluded to this, the rumors of the next 16 say some of the models (the Pro and Pro Max I believe) are adding metal shielding to the battery, to help them stay cooler. Theoretically, this is due to the possibility of faster charging, however if using regular 27W or lower charging, theoretically should help prolong battery life, I'm also holding out to learn about this compared to the 15 series or earlier phones.

My advice is, wait and see what the 16 series offers, but it does sound like the 12 mini was a hotter phone and the 12 series overall didn't have the most optimal battery life. A 13 or newer series you're less likely to have issues, again accounting for modest screen brightness outdoors and other general heat reducing activities (or rather, not doing activities that cause the phone to heat up, gaming, charging, high brightness, etc).

Oh, and it hasn't been said here, but wireless battery charging typically generates more battery heat, so I would suggest avoiding doing that - just in general - but especially outdoors in summer/warmer times of the year as that will likely compound to a hotter phone and degrade your phones battery more quickly than, not charging outside (wirelessly or otherwise).

Oh and the ring on the back of those cases is for magsafe accessories, so you are correct, it helps show where those accessories line up.

If you do upgrade, would be interesting to hear back if you compare both phones outdoors doing similar activities how much cooler your newer phone is.

I am not sure if this is helpful or not, but how everybody keeps saying about keeping the brightness level low. I already do that because I have the "night mode" turned on most of the time.

My only big concern is being able to hold it. Do the current cases have a metal ring or something I can put my middle finger in so it'll be easier for me to hold. I don't think it's going to be a huge difference, but my current iPhone is a mini and kind of old. My current case is an otter box and it it has a "kickstand" I always thought it was so you can attach it to a pocket or something, but it never worked because of the material being too thick or too thin.
