...My friend. Who I believe. He had just taken delivery of his new Macbook Pro Friday afternoon at work. That evening after he barely got any time on his computer received a call from apple. The apple rep asked him if he had just got his laptop and asked if he had opened it and turned it on. Yes, Yes, Yes. The Apple rep's response was "Ow Dear!" He explained to my friend that there was a small recall and he had to replace the laptop tonight. He said that he could have a replacement there within an hour. He was offered a ipod nano for the inconvenience. My friend was skeptical and made the guy send an email from his apple email address. Within an hour there was an Apple genius there with a replacement and the nano. I'm not sure if this means anything or if it is actually some kind of small scale important recall but it seemed very curious to both my friend and I.

Did the genius mention what was the recall about? Which model MBP? The Genius actually went to his house to replaced it?

That story is so suspect. Many of us are receiving our second or third SR MBP with 1/3 bottom yellow screen (or other hardware issues) and it takes effort to get Apple to acknowledge something is wrong and arrange a replacement... which takes forever to arrive.

I think that one was suppose to go to GWB as a gift from Laura. It had a special feature which prevents lies from being typed. Rumor has it, UPS got it mixed up.

I know it took a lot to get mine returned. That's why it is very strange. A hour response. Makes you think it must have been important for some reason or another.

I think that is pretty much a lie.

yeah, but actually it was Homeland Security cleverly disguised as a mac genius.

Getting back to the OP's post...:p

I think this was a con. I'm not sure where the advantage for the con artist lies yet, but that's usually how good cons work; you don't know the con until it's too late. My thinking is that the mbp is either stolen or has something wrong with it. Meanwhile, your friend's mbp is being resold for near-full price. I don't know, just hypothesizing.

That would suck. But he did mention it was a genius that he remembered seeing before. And he did not buy it at the store or apple.com

Wait, he bought it at a third party store (like FRYS)? Are there geniuses at such places? Our local FRYS has lots of Apple products (even a dedicated area with a large electric sign above the setup) and no genius. I'm really thinking this was a con now. Usually for recalls, there is a public notice and the customer is notified by phone and email with an official message indicating that the customer can return the product via mail or drop it off at a retail store. Very unusual.

I don't know. Thats why I take pictures when weird stuff happens. If people make too much of fuss about it, that is a little suspect.

And then you have proof too, for the naysayers. :)

Well, my compusa had a genius. But that was before we got an apple store, and before the compusa went out of business. But yea, the whole experience seems a little weird.

:confused::confused: Which post are you responding to? The OP's friend didn't have a defective notebook (which either of them could discern at the time).

Did you happen to notice that the two most active MBP posts right now are

(a) SR MBP LED LCD yellowish and gradients issue
(b) Has your SR MBP shipped yet?

both with 50,000 views? I said "many of us" not everyone, and effort meaning you have to call Apple, go to store to get problem verified by Genius, ship your computer back, and wait two weeks for replacement. Lie is a very strong word, go with exaggeration next time.

Like when a weird person has to come into my house for something. If he was a real apple employee, he shouldn't have minded.

Weird stuff in life doesn't always have to be yellow screens.

Hmmm...you'd think that I live in the Bay Area, we would have a genius at our local FRYS (why we don't have a single Apple store that's less than 30 minutes away is beyond me:rolleyes:).

Ahh...you meant take pictures/names of the "genius" who came to the door.

Yellow screens? Now you've lost me yet again.

Maybe there was some stuff on the laptop they didn't want him to have? Source code maybe? Wow, now I really want to know what was on the laptop!

I don't know about frys, I liked them when I lived in Baldwin Hills, but they always seemed kind of on the "not so in the know side", and they seemed to specialize in open box and refurb stuff. But that was seven years ago.

The Compusa that I went to in LA, where I bought my first DP 450 in 2000, always had a well informed Mac specialist that was on the payroll of apple and not Compusa, that sold the Macs and helped us out when we had questions. But I think that was before they called them geniuses.

In Nebraska, where I live (mostly now, still have a place in LA), at the Compusa we used to have up until a couple of months ago, we had a great older gentleman, who I actually met in 2001 at the Compusa in LA. He left that Compusa about a month after the Apple Store in Omaha opened up. That Compusa is no longer in business. (for good reasons)

I wish he was still available. The geniuses at or local apple store are, well, not up to their names, and think that since we just got an apple store here in Omaha, we are all just newbie switchers, thank god I really don't need to talk to them that much.

Too bad about the apple store man, I feel for you, but my apple store is about 35 minutes away, but thats not too bad, but that is the only reason I don't try to get a job there. (part-time for fun, and discounts :D)

Sorry, the yellow screen was about the SR macbooks problems saying that a problem (weird stuff) doesn't have to be hardware (or tech based at all), I may have been out of line a little bit, sorry for that one.

Maybe we should just PM each other, I think we ranted each other out last week on a thread. ;)

I think that was the longest post I have ever had.

Is your friend named Fox Mulder by chance?

The shipment of illegal guns and drugs coming into the harbor at midnight is no concern...we just can't let him have that mbp with all the UFO data on it!:p

Seriously, Maui, you're a lawyer. Do you know of any cons that might work this way?
