No, i was talking abou TG pro that, if I am not wrong, doesn't have paid upgrade every year.

Oh for some reason I thought you were implying iStats was cheap whereas TG Pro was expensive, but yes that is correct. Matter of fact it was free to upgrade from their Mac Store version "Temperature Gauge" to their retail version "TG Pro" (albeit they appear and function identically).

Apple blocked apps that use IOKit or at least certain parts of it from being updated in the Mac Store since its a low level API. So Tunabelly Software (TG Pro dev) thought it would just be easier and better to get everyone on TG Pro for ease of updates and use.

While the app is updated A LOT (today in fact) for bug fixes, tweaks, updates for new systems/components and aesthetically to blend with the current version of MacOS the feature set itself is similar to how it was 3+ years ago. Minor features have been added and other features streamlined but nothing I would refer to as worthy of a "paid upgrade".

Maybe iStat Menu brings more to the table with their updates to justify paid upgrades. I can say with a lot of confidence when it comes to a piece of software like this I don't like Djangos business practice. Not only do they charge for something you've already bought once but they can easily discontinue development for bugs/tweaks on older versions while continuing to develop the same piece of software. And forget about minor features being added to an older version once a new one is out.

Again, Bjango announced that the latest version (5.23) adds support for the 2017 iMac so I am quite sure that this is just a bug and they will fix the SSD temperature.

I find iStat Menus to be a beautiful app and also, it is not a new paid upgrade every year. The current major version 5 was released in August, 2014. For the past three years all updates have been free of charge. I don't think a half-price upgrade every three years is that much to pay for an app of this quality. The developers need to eat too. I like free too but this is their livelihood.

I see others having issues with this. 5.21 worked fine but the new update displays incorrect memory readings.

Admittedly I was unaware of the upgrade intervals. And I agree the devs "need to eat" and frankly I feel they should eat a lot with salaries "above average" due to the skill and schooling potentially required. I also agree that 10 dollars is a small price to pay for a program you absolutely love and/or can't live without. Take what I say next with a grain of salt because I don't use iStat and maybe I would absolutely love it.

This is probably the Linux in me talking but I feel their business strategy borderlines on a "money grab" from their core and loyal customers. Most obviously devs expand onto other things. Its not like this is Adobe CC where devs can constantly work on the same piece of software until retirement if those chose. Instead of adding different features to their program and recharging for it they could make those features into different programs. I could even see a limited install base for single users due to development required for different and new computers. I guess one could argue that you don't NEED to upgrade though.

I also think a lot of people underestimate "free software" revenue when there are donations allowed + forums/support with ads. I know many won't but I've donated to various software devs and organizations (Blender foundation, VideoLAN, MakeMKV (currently free in beta), various Linux distros, GIMP etc) that have made my life considerably easier seemingly for free.

GIMP in particular is an amazing piece of photo editing software. For my uses it revivals Photoshop and is otherwise "free". Clearly those devs can "eat", its been around since the mid 90's.

Now in no way am I saying iStat should be free. Just for what it is and does I don't see the reasoning for paid upgrades. Hell, most of the time devs will at least try to mask this by renaming the software or something, "iStat Pro" for example.
