the Apple store has NEW above all iMacs when you look to purchase one. Were the new iMacs suppose to be released with the MacBook pros last week?

I just saw this too. My mom needs a new iMac and I don’t want her spending money on over a year old computer. Last updated were over 400 days old.

I hope a refresh is soon.

Unless you're mom is designing the next space shuttle, I doubt she'll see much of a difference between the current iMacs and the next version, and will probably be happy with either for years to come. The question is how miserable is she making YOU now... :)

I told her I wouldn’t spend that kind of money on a over a year old computer. She’s actually learning her iPad more and more. She does want a new iMac soon, but she’s willing to wait.

At this point I wouldn't buy one either. I'm waiting for the chip upgrade at least. I'm sure the performance difference will be negledgeable for my needs but it may get me an extra year or so out of your system down the road. Because realistically any chip today should handle the demands of any basic tasks, like surfing, banking, email type stuff, for the basic user for years to come.

Yes, my 2007 iMac is still able to do that (with the help of maxed RAM and an SSD) 11 years later. But for that basic type of user there's no real reason to wait. Of course it all depends on how long. It's July, and if we knew that there was going to be a new iMac in six weeks I agree it would not pay to buy one now (IF Apple sticks to its policy of maintaining the same basic price structure). But if you're sitting in front of an insufferably slow machine for hours every day and you knew you'd be stuck there another 6 months or more then I would question the overall benefit of waiting for an incremental spec bump. But of course no one knows for sure. And there are small "risks" to waiting -- such as the possibility that new 27" iMacs will not have upgradeable RAM and thereby make RAM expansion unaffordable or impractical for some, or the unlikely event that Apple somehow dumbs down the line to bolster the iMac Pro and the coming Mac Pro. It's all a fancy game of guessing.

Been looking for this thread. As of today, it looks like the new was dropped. Next time you see it, it will likely mean there is truly a new update.

This is really good new actually. They wouldn't do it just to do it unless there was a reason.

They can't just keep the new up during the transition from 2017 to 2018 imacs so there has to be enough of a break in between so that when "new" pops up again, it actually has an impact for their marketing.

Hopefully we get new imacs in sep/oct.

I personally think if you do not see them in August, you will have to wait until October for the next chance. Highly doubtful September will drop them. However, Apple could sneak them in while the store is down for iDevices.

Ming Chi Kuo’s report said that Apple will be launching a new iMac with “significant display technology” later this year, what that means I don’t know.

It is everyone's speculation. I even tried to research what "DTV" is.

Yea I have no idea, the only thing I can think of is putting True Tone like in the MacBook Pro and maybe updating the screen to a 120hz? Or maybe upping the resolution to beyond 5K?

There has been some speculation in another thread I am responding too (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/no-2018-imac.2121604/) around the display. Someone mentioned a 6K monitor and others slapped that down promptly. I am not as adverse in the display space, so I am not sure the benefits versus the technological capabilities / limitations. I do think you will at least see a True Tone as you mentioned. I think you could get that in silent spec bump without an event.

Yea considering they have put True Tone on the new MacBook Pro’s this year and it’s also on the iPhone and iPad from pervious years it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to think it will also be coming to the iMac/desktop.

Apart from a increase in resolution and maybe a 120hz screen I can’t really think of anything else that they will do. Especially something that would be called “significant display technology” from among Chi Kuo. It’s a shame his report didn’t go into more detail.

The screen improvement could literally just be something that gets rid of screen burn in too.

it could be something like bringing the True Tone to the iMac, it would make perfect sense considering it's now on the iPhone, iPad Pro and now the 2018 MacBook Pro's and even the Touch Bar part of those machines. There could be other things as well but i'm not sure. Maybe reduced bezels?

Reduced bezels would be nice, but wouldn't they need to redo the body then which would leave less room, or just increase screen size to 29" ?

True tone is almost a 100% guarantee to be on imac at some point, most likely next update....didn't even think of that.

Yea they could increase the screen size, however i would say that they will leave it until a complete redesign which i don't think will be this year unfortunately. I have no idea what Ming Chi Kuo means by "significant display technology" it could mean a number of things, maybe a higher resolution display? moving to a 6K-7K for the 27" and 5K for the 21"?

The problem I have with apple's obsession with increase resolution is that it taxes the cpu and gpu a lot more for not more more gain.

I could run so many more track and plugins in Logic Pro X on a 1080p or 1440p Screen than I could on 5k.

What could does 5k actually do for me? It does nothing but take away CPU & GPU performance and makes the machines less powerful.

Just from gaming I know one of the quickest ways to increase performance and add fps and make the game smoother is to decrease resolution....that is old news.

Something similar applies in logic pro X it would seem. I could be wrong though but from what I understand, adding higher resolution is actually making the machines less powerful.

5k is overkill and 4k is overkill for a lot of people too.

6-7k wold just be beyond stupid as they don't have the room within the machine to get the airflow going to where it needs to be to cool a machine properly to run it right.

6-7k on a custom built PC with any specs you want custom built seems ok, but on an imac....not sure why they want to increase resolution so much.

I wish they would build an imac specifically catered towards Logic Pro X a bit more where as everything seems catered towards Final Cut Pro and making videos...including marketing.

It's like they sometimes act like Logic Pro X doesn't exist.

Apple already has one of the best, if not the best, monitors on an AIO. There is no need to increase the resolution and thus raise the cost. That and 6K or greater resolution does little to nothing for the majority of us. Smaller bezels have nothing to do with performance, and while they look cool, I don't see any real advantage for Apple to do that. I'm sticking to the idea that with the iMac Pro just coming out and looking like the current iMac, they won't change the design of the current models body. I think that True Tone is a real possibility and of course a CPU and GPU spec bump. Other than that I'd be surprised with anything more. I'm waiting for the new models to drop so I can get my first Mac other than my iPad.

Neither of those things really make sense, and are probably infused with the usual dose of wishful thinking.

It most likely just means True Tone.

I am in this boat - just True Tone, CPU and GPU updates. Until the CPU specs are released (assuming they use a 9th gen) we have no clue about the max RAM. Current and 8000 series both max at 64GB. Not sure if they will bump that to 128GB or not.
