What do you think that solves? It gets you the a 10Gb port without the cost of TB ports - but you still have only two TB ports even with that hub. I have one - the same one I think, albeit branded OWC.

It has two TB ports on - one to connect to the iMac, one for use. So you're left with 2 ports still, and your 10Gb. You still don't have the I/O of the pro.

My point being - and you know the point I was making - adding all that stuff to an i9 takes it close to the base cost of an iMac Pro. I also have two 5k screens plugged in to my 'Pro. Try that on your i9.

They're both excellent machines, which is why I have them - I just simply could not plug what I have in my 'pro into the i9 without lifting the price. 10Gbe, two Samsung X5, and two 5K screens.

I have started to read about those 2019 i9 imacs dying instantly, is there any issue?
Some months ago I returned a dead i9 iMac. It died after half an hour of random restarts and in its second week of life. Now I have a new Clevo laptop with desktop components inside, like an 8 core i7 9700 and better thermals than the iMac.

And lose a port in the process? When you only have two on the normal iMac. So normal iMac, buy a 10Gbe TB adapter, then a TB hub cos you need more than one other TB port....and you're approaching the iMac Pro price point?

The normal 5K iMac also has only one controller split between those two TB3 ports, so that can have an effect on I/O performance as well.

FWIW, I found this thread as I'm deliberating the loaded i9 2019 Mac vs base 2017 iMac Pro question as well...largely initiated by having just a refurb offer for the Pro which drops its base price to $3500.

Instantly dying ?
Not discounting your reading but I have over the decades read plenty where someone puts in subpar RAM and go into endless kernal panics. But "dying" is just strange.

Like when I read about people "bricking" something but were able to reinstall the OS and everything was fine.... that is not bricking something. Bricked means that thing doesn't work. At all. Practically zero chance of recovery.

I’m sure the OP has long since made a decision . . .

If I were making that decision, I’d probably go iMac Pro, mainly for the better cooling. I have a 2019 i9, and for me it’s terrific (though the fan can be distracting when pushed). I have the i9/580x/2 TB Fusion, which was $2060 refurbished via the military/veteran store. But if the price difference were ~$500 instead of ~$1500 I probably would have gone with the iMac Pro.

I went through this a month ago. Ended up with a $4k refurb iMac Pro with v64 and 64GB ram. I wanted the extra thermal capacity, extra ports, and Ram for VMs. I dislike not having quick sync but can live with that. I think the iMac Pro is a nice machine....I'm a dual monitor spaces kind of guy. Very happy.
