Two things that Apple could easily fix with a new Firmware.
It's not at all clear that the lack of brightness adjustment could be fixed with new firmware.
We don't know the capabilities the backlight lamp-driver hardware or what range of control
is available to the software/firmware.

The only "correct" way to reduce display brightness is to turn down the intensity of the
backlight. Any other approach must adversely affect color depth and contrast.

Thread Starter,

per my post above, did you try DarkAdapted X?

anyone else ever try it?

It does something qualitatively different with the contrast when used to darken the brightness when compared to using the F1/F2 keys to adjust brightness.

is this or OSX or Windows?

Im quite happy with the shades on osx but i need something for windows pls!! im going blind at night

Will Apple release a firmware update to solve this issue, it is too bright.

the 24" and 20" iMacs have completely different brightness levels....The 20" can be dimmed to 50% brightness whereas the 24" doesn't seem to go below 70% (at best).

It must have something to do with the panels in the 24". The previous gen iMac had the same issue...the 24" panel just doesn't get very dim even at the lowest setting.

It has to do with the contrast ratio of those panels AND the brightness. I think the older iMac 24" was either 600:1 or 800:1 - but next to my old 20" iMac - it looks terrible. My 20" dell panel is 1000:1 and looks superior next to it. As does my roomies 24" dell panel (that also is 1000:1)

I had to "de-tune" my dell panel, so it wouldn't make my iMac look bad.

Bump,

Glad I found this thread, I was wondering if I was the only one with this problem. The screen is way to bright and agree with other posters. Has anyone found any other apps that may allow you to control the backlight?
