iMac 27 mid 2011 cooling mod?

Hi everyone,

I came across a video where someone drilled holes in the case of an iMac 27" Mid-2010, directly below the fan, to improve airflow and cooling.

I’ve attached photo (first picture) from the video to show what I’m talking about.

I’m curious to hear your opinions on whether this mod actually works to lower temperatures.

Has anyone tried drilling holes in the case for better ventilation?

Does it make a noticeable difference in cooling performance?

Also, a general question to the community: do you think drilling holes (second picture) in the iMac’s case is a practical way to reduce temperatures, or are there risks or better alternatives?

When Apple was faced with the increasing heat generated inside the more powerful iMac Pro they did exactly the same thing - they put a slot across the full width of the bottom of the case.

The thing to bear in mind is to put the holes where the fans will draw the cool air over the hot components into the fan inlet.
If you position the holes nearer to the fan intake than the hotspot then that would make matters worse… 😵‍💫

Since that era iMac has a slot at the top there will also be some convection airflow as well, so the holes could help that.
