Just added ocsp.apple.com to /etc/hosts (redirecting to 127.0.0.1) and that solved the issue. Figure I'll remove it once this all settles down, until then I'm back up and running.
Thank you a million times over. My iMac is back to being usable. I am just amazed at what just transpired. I have never seen this in my years of being in the Apple Ecosystem.

I seriously thought I had been attacked by ransomware. Happened exactly when I was examining a raw TIFF file some shady company sent me lol.

Happening here too. Has been limiting the work I can get done today. Very concerning that merely launching apps depends on some Apple service being functional....

What does this ocsp.apple.com do? Why does it have such an oversize influence over what applications I can run on my Mac??

Which is a good thing or the apps would never launch when you're disconnected from the network, right?
Well, from the standpoint of "I need to make my apps work again", definitely.

From a security standpoint, when you consider that all you need to do to bypass certificate validation on a Mac is to block (or redirect) connections to a well-known Apple server, it gets to be a bit more concerning.

In a nutshell, it is used by the system to determine if an app's Apple-issued certificate is still valid or has been revoked by Apple (which is done, rarely, when a developer has grossly violated Apple Developer terms, for apps that have been identified as malware, etc) or by the developer (when pulling an app from circulation). Evidently macOS connects to this server at every app launch rather than using periodic background polling, so if the connection times out, the system will wait until some predefined number of timeouts before it gives up and allows the app to launch anyway.

I also started having trouble this afternoon with everything running very slowly or not launching at all on my computer. After a total shutdown and reboot, it seems to be behaving normally again.

Given that many others are suddenly reporting problems with their Macs, it seems very plausible this is related to some Apple service or validation tool. So many processes running in the background of these modern machines... I hope Apple gets their services fixed soon!

Hailing from France here. had the issue about 14 hours ago, while I was working on a crucial project with Logic Pro. suddenly EVERYTHING fell apart, couldn't even open notes or calendar, that was a nightmare. when I figured the issue was gone when turning off wi-fi, I automatically thought of a terrible data breach of some sort. after a few hours rebooting and navigating through the activity monitor to find what was causing all this, I decided to go to bed. Just woke up, everything is working like a charm and what do I see ?

Good Job Apple ?

Hi there

I just wanted to know if anyone can help here.

This issue of adding ocsp.apple etc is done how - using what app, and appended to which file in particular?

I am going utterly nuts with my iMac and this MIGHT be the last chance before it gets royally defenestrated!!

Many thanks for any simple insructions

Cheers
