I have this problem as well. I am not in the return window anymore because I was trying everything under the sun to fix it. I thought I had fixed it as I did a full reformat and install. This worked for about a solid week.

I have hardly any software installed. I do have dropbox, but I think it happened before then.

The new twist is that it reboots when it is asleep. I get the Graphic error, send to Apple, etc. But, now, the fan will go to zero after the reboot. This is very bad. It simply stays that way until everything overheats. I reboot and all is well.

I just tried the "do not automatically put computer to sleep because monitor is off" checkbox. We'll see if that helps.

I do not really care about sleep per se because I cannot imagine that my computer is using much energy with the monitor off. All is solid state.

I know something is up because after the fresh install the computer has not rebooted WHILE I am using it. That sucked. It has not (fingers crossed) done that since the reformat, it has been solely a sleep/wake issue.

I feel for us all that have this. Not what I want from a $3300 computer. No way.

Am now going to the link someone posted about Apple's response to this. I sure do hope they figure it out. I mean they have enough money :)

I was experiencing the "a graphics problem has been detected" and "sleep wake failure" with a restart overnight when the iMac was put to sleep. Nothing I did resolved the issue. But yesterday thought I would try another PRAM and SMC reset and it didn't do it overnight, see how it goes.

Sleep Wake Failure

FWIW I had the "Sleep Wake Failure" on my Macbook Pro (2014) and it turned out to be the IBM Trusteer Rapport security software that was recommended by my Santander on-line banking.
I removed the software and everything is now ok.

So far the checkbox in Energy about only turning off monitor has done the trick. No issues in 3 days AND it comes out of "sleep" much more quickly and of course reliably. I'll take a big fat W in the Win column!

Mine has been doing the same thing, and requires me to physically unplug the power cord to reboot. Holding power button does nothing.

It didn't do this before I set it up, including adding external USB drives/hub, so I suspect it's something to do with that, or perhaps a piece of software loaded since getting it.
When I first got the machine, I set it up for a few days without connecting anything external, and merely focused on getting bootcamp/Windows 8.1 installed properly (was interested in doing this as my 2011 iMac refused to install windows via bootcamp, and I had to rely on VMware).

So far this AM it "slept" overnight after clicking the "not sleeping when display sleeps" option in Energy Saver and I had no problems this AM. We shall see-I use it to stream movies for my 3 yr old, and if it's unavailable when I'm at work, there's hell to pay!

Seems that there's no problem with USB stuff unplugged, so I'm thinking it's a fault in the USB controller, or simply a bad USB hub-although it seemed to work OK with my last iMac...

Just purchased a new hub, and will hope for the best

I am in your same boat. I am on the verge of returning this machine, as much as I love it. It is beyond believe that a machine that cost as much as it did have this error happening constantly.

On top of getting those the "sleep wake failure" and the "Graphics problem has been detected" I get the "computer was restarted because of a problem"

Also on mission control I get graphic bugs.

Did you ever return your iMac, or fix the graphics problems? I get that exact graphic bug on Activity Monitor in Mission Control - exactly the same. I also get graphics glitches in Time Machine.

I'm worried I/we have got a bad GPU...

I have it since upgrading ram?!?

I didn't have the bug on my new iMac, just bought 16Go of ram (certified for iMac retina 5k from Crucial) to add to the 8 from Apple... and now, the iMac fails to wake up.
So the problem might be with the memory chips ?
I'll remove the new memory chips to see.

Mine has all come good since the 10.10.2 update.
Haven't had one "sleep wake failure" or reboot since.
The graphics glitches in Time Machine and Mission Control have also gone.

I removed the Crucial 16 Go ram kit and the iMac works fine again.
But it needs more ram.
I don't know if the ram kit is faulty or not.

crash Problem starts after MEMORY UPGRADE

I used my iMac 5k (low end default version with 8GB RAM,1TB Fusion,M290X) for 6 weeks with no problem at all. no crashes !!!

4 days ago I did remove the apple shipped memory (2x4GB) and installed 2x8GB crucial MAC compatible memory and..

I HAVE THE CRASH PROBLEM AFTER LONG SLEEP TIME 1-2 TIMES EACH DAY AFTER I EXCHANGED THE MEMORY

Memory test with techTools and with apple diag bootup show no issue with them

But I also have the Apple USB-Keyboard and not sure if I change the Port it is connected when I install the memory.!?!
And I also have Dropbox installed and the only software I change during that time is a update of the TechTools Pro 7!?!

Can people with the problems confirm that a bigger size of memory (16+) is installed in their iMac Retina?

>Are you on 10.10.2?
Yes I am on 10.10.2 since 28th of January and crashing start 1 week ago direct after memory upgrade.

for me it looks like a combination of memory and connected stuff (usb,...)

Today I will remove the memory again to see if the issue still exits

Solved :)

no more crash after changing memory again to shipped configuration.

Result: My wakeup crash problem was 100% related to the used 2x8GB crucial memory

Today I did order 2 x 8GB KINGSTON HyperX Impact Black Series DDR3L memory to see if I run in same problems...

What brand does Apple use? I thought Crucial was about the safest? Sure hope you don't have to use Apples. Its 400 for 16gb lol.

Is the troublesome Ram high or low density? A lot of the Crucial ram on Ebay while cheaper, appears to be high density to me (an amateur to Apple products) some may say it doesn't make a difference but maybe it does?

Same here, I did send the kit back for exchange, I hope I'll get a "good" one back, otherwise I'll have to ask for a refund. :(

Is there any Ram that works with his Mac?

Sure enough I added the Crucial 16GB kit from amazon and after 4 days of working flawlessly I got the "Sleep wake failure experienced a problem".

Is there any ram that works with this machine besides the $400 apple 16 GB kit. This is truly annoying.

Ive been doing some more research and this seems to be a somewhat common complaint of the Retina iMac. Ive seen this issue on the Apple discussion forum. There seems to be no common consensus that its RAM etc. Some people think they have fixed it by resetting the PRAM, removing memory, reinstalling the OS, turning off "prevent computer from sleeping automatically when display is turned off".
If there is a hardware issue at play here such as ram etc the computer would crash in other areas besides just waking from sleep. I believe there is some software issue with the sleep mode with the retina iMac and sleeping. The problem is it very intemrittent. I went almost 5 without the issue (thought I was safe) until I came home from work tonight.

Other then that this is a rock solid PC. I have run everything on it form X-plane 10 with overhang cranked up to a full Windows domain in VMware fusion 7.

My Computer rebooted in the middle of the night. I removed the Crucial RAM and will see how things go over the next week or 2. If it doesn't crash I will return the crucial and get the OWC memory.

Interesting thread, don't think I've had any issues as yet (touch wood). I have also upgraded RAM using crucial memory (2x8) bought from crucial themselves back in Dec

Will keep an eye on this and report back

short Update

After daily wakeup crash with my crucial memory:

I have now Kingston memory installed since 3 days (update: 4 weeks) without any problem.
Btw: The memory speed is even faster, memory is shown as working with 1866MHz (also confirmed from kingston on their web-page) :)

I use and can recommend this memory for iMac 5K:
Kingston HyperX S0 DDR3 PC1866 16GB CL10 16GB KIT
PN: HX318LS10IBK2/16

Price was close to the crucial memory and I did remove the preinstalled apple memory because if the different speed...
