iMac 6,1 24", A1200, manufactured after 23-Jan-2007
2.1 GHz Core2 Duo T7300
Nvidia GeForce 7300GT

Hardware upgrades:
Cloned 250 GB disk to 640 GB disk (using Linux dd)
Upgraded memory to 2x2GB PC5300 DDR2 RAM

Software upgrades:
OSX 10.6.2 -> 10.6.8

I have the same machine, I haven’t put El Capitan on it since the graphics card does not support hardware acceleration, rendering the machine virtually unusable.

Mountain lion works on it like a charm, and is the latest OS I would recommend for this setup.

Apple AppStore refuses to download Mountain Lion. At option boot, the system refuses to install from a USB that was created from an image downloaded from a MacBookPro.
If you have a recipe or suggestions for altering a Mountain Lion install image (plist editing, perhaps?) I would very much appreciate a link to the 'how-to'.
