Another firmware version is available…

Thanks to the contributors in this thread, I can now connect a MacBook Pro wirelessly (with 128-bit WEP) to my Westell VersaLink 327W Gateway.

My 327W was identical to that of balamw in comment #3 — an early revision A model with firmware version 03.00.63a.

Unfortunately the discussion at the last link of comment #11 by sublagga wasn’t available when I tried to read it, and I wasn’t able to find a cached copy of that discussion either.

The firmware download mentioned by tsptsp in comment #12 brings revision A models to firmware version 03.02.01; peeking into the file shows that it was created in August 2005.

To answer nglovett’s question in comment #17, I was able to find a newer firmware version (version 4.04.03.00, from May 2007) over at Verizon. (In case Verizon changes this URL in future, try searching for “Westell VersaLink 327W Gateway” and your 327W’s model number [in my case, “A90-327W15-06”] in pages at verizon.net via your favorite search engine.) This firmware is available in three different downloads: one for revision A models, one for revision B models, and one for revision D models. I downloaded this revision A firmware and installed it on my 327W, and it solved the problem for me. Note that unlike firmware versions 03.00.63a and 03.02.01, which have embedded HTML pages that are mostly similar in appearance and arrangement, the embedded HTML pages in firmware version 4.04.03.00 give a Verizon-branded appearance that has a largely different arrangement. However, this Verizon-specific appearance and arrangement does match what was documented in the VersaLink 327W User Guide, a PDF file which was (and perhaps still is?) downloadable from verizon.net.

If any of the previous posters are still wondering how to get their 327W to work wirelessly with their Apple products, I’d be happy to try to help.

Location of firmware updates

The firmware updates are available at http://www.westell.com/ht-upgrade.html.

I was previously able to see my wireless network from a Macbook Pro, but connecting to it gave a message of "Connection timeout", even with WEP disabled. Updating the firmware fixed the problem.

hi all, just found this thread and am really confused with my macbook and why it won't connect to my westell versalink 327w router. i tried downloading the upgrade package and yet can't seem to open it, rather my macbook doesn't have any viable programs to open it. i also tried going to the WireSpeed Data Gateway page provided by Westell, and tried to click update device under maintenance, however everything i click it asks for a username and password i have no clue which either are. if anyone can help me out that'd be fantastic thanks again!

You have to go into your Wireless Gateway (http://192.168.1.1) and load the upgrade there (Advanced>Firmware Upgrade>Upgrade From a Computer in the Network).
