Surely if you put all of your photos into albums, that aren't kept open, this would speed up iPhoto surely. At least then, when iPhoto opens, it doesn't need to cache all of the photos to RAM? But add 1Gb for that extra kick, Crucial is a good bet!

Cheers

everybody keeps talking about the iphoto library slowing him down. I dont think thats it. It is the rosseta apps Office, and MSN that he said he was running. Rosseta is a RAM hog. but the OP said that he got the extra gig of ram which cant hurt at all :)

Rosetta sucks there I said it.
It seems fast enough for me. The few PowerPC applications I have left run just fine. Then again it's only X-Chat Aqua, Microsoft Office, quiktime fs, and Stuffit Expander.

Hey, I was thinking of making a new thread but I'll just post here. I am going to purchase an iMac 20" and I mostly use iTunes (3000 songs) and internet, maybe some garage band. I also play some games that arent too ram and graphics intensive. Is 1gb of ram enough?

Sound like it will be enough now but regardless, start with 1GB and add another some time in the future if you feel the need. Just make sure you get: 1x1GB when you purchase the iMac. This assumes you feel confident enough to add it yourself.

I have a 20" Duo iMac with 2 gigs of ram and she's a real beast. I'd imagine if I can work in Final Cut Studio without much of a hiccup you won't see any delays either when you upgrade to 2 gigs of ram.

Get some ram and please use adium :)

iPhoto

I have about 1500+ photos in my iMac and have seen the lag when I have a few of the larger rolls open (400+ photos displaying the thumbnails).

I have a full blown iMac 20" w/ 2G memory and 256MB video card. I haven't run the activity monitor so I can't tell you what it is, just that your not alone.

Is rosetta really that stupid ram hungry? I ask because I've been in print shops where their running dual g5's with only 2gb of ram and these are professionals working with huge inDesign/Quark files.

It just seems a little odd that people using a word processor and msn are running that much ram and sneering at anything less. I mean these are basic task that can be done on a g3 with 128mb of ram. Hell I've run dreamweaver with 64mb of ram.

I'm not saying more ram isn't good. It just seems a lot of people consider ever seeing a beach ball or more than 2 dock bounces to be inexcusable.

Yes, Rosetta is really that RAM hungry. Translated PowerPC code is stored in the RAM for faster access. The more RAM you have, the more code you can store in RAM.

The one thing is that those G5's don't have additional overhead with Rosetta since they're PPC based.

Adium is much better. www.adiumx.com
;)

aMSN is also quite handy- it has webcam support as well for the iSights if thats useful for anyone. I personally use adium though, I dont really see the point in webcams anyway. Rubbish framerates and rather poor quality. Maybe in a few years when ADSL 2+ is widespread I'll start using it :p

Anyway, aMSN can be found at http://amsn.sourceforge.net/download.php

iSight to iSight video conferencing is actually quite impressive for the quality- both video and audio. I routinely do this between Boston and Switzerland, and even across the ocean the quality doesn't suffer. It's the same quality as when you turn on iChat and click the iSight button to see yourself. Amazing!

OK, I don't know what this means. I use MSN Messenger right now on my PC and it is pretty important that I continue to run it in the future as well. I am looking to buy an iMac with 1 or 2 GB RAM. Am I going to have a problem?

i believe Messenger for Mac was dropped at version 5.1, so you can forget about all the nice games, winks, ... strictly for messaging, I now actually prefer adium over the PC MSN messenger.

oh has anybody else noticed (win+mac users) that MSN messenger for windows is like the only MS product that is actually decent and stable enough to run for a while + it's free :D it's not like IE which you should be paid to use for all the security issues it has. must be a strange group of people working on this over at MS :D :D

My problem is that earlier this year (Jan 1 to be exact) my ex moved to Georgia with my kids which is like 600+ miles from here. We have "Virtual Visitation" each week. We do that by using the Video Call function within MSN Messenger. It seems to work pretty well. Tried Skype, but it has turned out to be a disappointment. Don't need the game and winks, but I do need video/voice chat. Getting the kids computer changed over to any different software is going to be like banging my head against the wall. Thoughts?

I would, but it keeps crashing, every single time. Without fail. So I use aMSN-its not perfect, but its better than Adium.
