iMac as display for Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt

I'm trying to connect my 21.5 inch iMac (2015) to my Macbook Pro (2013) using a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable. I'm obviously missing something because I thought it would work quite simply.

Is it possible for it to work this way, or is it impossible?

Command-F2 is the key combination to enter Target Display Mode on supported Macs.

But unfortunately 2015 iMacs do not support Target Display Mode according to this support article:
