I dont want to start a battle here but in my opinion, the iMac has 'started' to look slightly, very slightly, dated. Thats my opinion. It is still a great design and totally blows away even the best PC designs but when you think of the iMac as an old machine its design can seem slightly old.

I really have no idea how Apple will make a new design. I was looking at the old iMacs' designs and even today their design is quite competent with regular PC designs.

What is your opinion on the current iMacs design?

The whole "where did the computer go" i kinda kewl. If i were jobs i wouldn't focus that much on making the iMac slimmer. I would focus on making it cheaper and improving it's specs.

the imac does look a bit dated. and for me its because of the 'chin' i'd rather have it slightly thicker than have that huge chunk underneath. but thats me.

I know what you guys are saying but as said above, I'd rather keep this design and have a better standard processor/graphics card. The only things, in my opinion, dated about the iMac are the X1600 and GMA950.

I think Apple's whole computer line looks dated. There was as time when having white computers was truly a great thing. It looked very nice and classy. However now, I'm getting really sick of the white. It looks so boring now.

i really like(d) the imac look. it is starting to get a bit older now and if apple can come up with another awsomeo power design they would sell so many.

I personally don't mind the chin in the 24" iMac but in the 20" and 17" versions, I think it overwhelms the screen. The white plastic is what has got to go. Black would be nice, metal would be even better. I would love to see a stainless steel or gunmetal look.

The iSlab is definitely the Don "No Soul" Simmons of Macs. It doesn't have Teh Cute that their best all-in-one units had, and it doesn't even have the evil Darth Vader vibe of the G5 and Xeon towers. The mini doesn't have much personality either, but at least it makes up for that with its tininess.

I don't think the iMac looks all that dated now. But considering if you buy it now and keep it for 3 years, it will look very dated by then. It would be like having an iMac G3 now :p

I think the G4 cube still looks amazing though.

There was also an idea for the iMac to be iPhone themed. i.e rimmed with chrome metal and the rest black which i thought looked very nice. Or a touch screen looking somewhat like the one above. I couldn't find that picture or of the iphone mac but ill keep searching.

nowhere fast
I never really cared about the chin, the thing still looks like a monitor to me, but in a redesign I'd be very happy with something that looks very similar to an ACD from the front, but is up to 3" deep. I'd prefer cheaper, faster desktop components to an anorexic design...it's a desktop for fook-sake, if you don't have room for a another 1.8" of depth you should really just have a laptop...

A black iMac would be much nicer than a white one. I find the white border around the screen too distracting, especially when watching movies.

I've actually considered buying a white one and then paint it black or even whine red. But that would void the guarantee.

exactly. make it 2-3" deep. very little bezel. and hey. maybe even a swappable graphics card!?

put one or two usb ports on the side along with the headphone/mic jack for easy access and wow. that'd be wonderful.

Why are so many against using mobile chips? They generate less heat, making the computer more quiet, and they consume less power which is good for the environment.

How much is the speed difference really? The iMacs are plenty fast to me, more than enough for most people.

looks like the HP lcds
ga029aa_150.gif

No it doesn't. It looks more like the Samsung 226BW I'm using right now (round rect in glossy black). But it's still different.

The only thing it has in common with the HP monitors is the colors.

Sorry to kick a dead horse, but that old photoshop of the 30" Mac Pro was pure asthetic extacy.

I'd totally (#*$ my credit up if that came out... It'd be worth it.

You Rristening Apple? I want to attain the next Revel.

I don't think its looking dated at all and most people I know who aren't Mac users can't believe how amazing it looks. Maybe that's the problem, that those of us who use it on a daily basis have become very blase about its design. There's still nothing else out there that comes close to what the iMac achieves in its unique form.
