Do keep an eye on the temps though at 7 years old it could well be that the thermal paste has degraded and the fans were spinning up to keep the GPU cool you will now be risking damaging the GPU if you force it to be slower when it needs that cooling.

Macs Fan Control is working for me! Thanks! However, I can keep an eye on the temps, but I am not sure what the temps should be. Here are my current temps. How do I know if they go too high?

After 5 years of this problem, even taking it in to the Dealership and them saying it was something wrong with the logic board, and because I had no AppleCare I either had to live with it or buy a new computer, I finally fixed it! I tried SMC Fan Control, HDD Fan Control, and nothing worked. I'll get to the point, but I would like to say had I not returned to this ongoing problem while fixing other things it wouldn't have worked. What worked for me, was the Macs Fan Control program! It runs now at a quiet temp and it is perfect! Thanks.
Hello! I was very excited to read your solution, and have downloaded the Macs Fan Control program. That said, I don't know where to go from here to fix the problem - can you give me some guidance. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you download the following program HDD Fan Control.dmg it will fix your problems.

I tried everything and nothing worked. My iMac fan was going nuts after I replaced its HD to an SSD.

Finally the HDD Fan control software fixed the problem instantaneously and for ever. It just cost $30.

Thank you for posting this tip. It helped me a lot.

Adjust each one to "Custom" > Ambient and set the top value to 32° (not sure if it's optimal but worked for me ;)

I've a mid 2010 27" imac that has been running its fans full on for the past 3 or so years. That constant whoosh is fatiguing and made me use my desktop less and less. I had also given up on using SMCfans which seemed to do nothing.

I then did some open heart surgery, and opened up my imac. This was initially very stressful not wishing to mess up. Thank god for Youtube! I removed the logic board and using compressed air aerosols cans, removed 10-11 years of dust from the heatsinks which appeared to be clogged with blocks of felt, solid dust! Following 2 cans of air the innards was spotless and all put back together.

On powering up, the blast from the fans was as before - noisy, but after installing and running Macs Fan Control, and within a minute of running it, my fans slowed down and a calm fell upon my office. The temperatures for the cpu, gpu, hdd dropped to 40-50c, so all seems good - very very good - and quiet.

Since then I've done some heavy duty 3d rendering, which previously was impossible,(the iMac would crash and restart within 15 minutes of starting the render). Now rendering can go for 2-3hours and the temperature, not rising above 60c -result!

Many thanks Kemogeden best tip ever.

I hope these reading are in degrees fahrenheit?
