i don't think it can be a software related problem. Some have the issues... some not. So, I think it is a hardware-related. And I hope Apple don't fix it through a software update (workaround) that downgrade graphic card specs

version 1.1 = lockups every 5 min.

version 1.0 = 5 days now without a restart or lockup.

software is the problem.

i read somewhere that ati and apple are working on new drivers specifically for the ati video cards.....anyone know anything about this?
All I have heard on this is rumors . The speculation that 10.5 & AMD will have new drivers is just happy thinking. I have not seen any credible talk though its assumed that new drivers are allways coming but what comes with them who knows? I am also wondering why apple is using Xt's at pro speeds and 667 memory not 800? anyone say heat or software issues?

Unfortunately, this may well not be a driver issue. My alu iMac locks up too, often with a black screen and sometimes I see weird artefacts.

I've seen this myself on my mates 24" iMac. Its a Fact. No ones trying to scare anyone and we're certainly not trying to influence people not to buy them. I myself are planning on buying one. Both this and light bleed/yellow tinge on the screen I have witnessed prior to ever reading the reports.

Installed 1.1 without really thinking as an online update, no problems. I have locked-up the system all of twice, once before and once after the update in 2 weeks continuous use. Both times I knew it was my fault for running too many demanding programs at once inside only 1gb ram. I only re-set on impatience, as it was still running but slow.

Now I have more than enough ram. Multiple 3d & crunching can take place at once!

It should never hang a decent computer with a decent operating system. If you are running out of memory, the system simply should warn you, don't start more programs or so... In the worst scenario, an application could crash, but not the OS.
Anyway, it is difficult to run out of memory if you have a big swap configured.
