I don't know about snobbery, but I agree that spending that much on a home office is overkill. I can understand if you're building a home office because you're planning to have clients and such. But my goodness, I’d rather take a vacation than splurge like that.
But I’m not spending it so what the heck. It’s just that some people’s priorities are misplaced.

$20,000 for a home office is hardly overkill in a $1 Million+ home. Just because someone doesn't have your priorities doesn't mean theirs are "misplaced" and it may not even be a splurge.

Exactly. It's all relative and has nothing to do with ones priorities. If someone can afford expensive things that somehow makes them a snob? You'd think the Mac community would be a little more open minded about how someones spends their money considering Macs tend to be a little more expensive.

Why did you buy a Mac instead of say an old Dell off ebay? Because the Mac was better and YOU could afford it. Trust me if I could afford a Gallardo I'd be driving one.

That's nonsense! Someone Else should always define your priorities and what's best for you! No?

Personally, while I think the iMac is a splendid looking machine, I think the ultimate in class would be a Mac Pro tucked just nicely under the desk and 2 30" ACD's on top of the desk. A nice slim new Apple Keyboard and a wireless Mighty Mouse would top it all off.

But that's just my opinion and what I would do given the space and budget.

You'd be getting pretty much the ultimate in power both in the Mac Pro and the ACD's and it would look great (and expensive, which is always a nice look too).

Please come back and post pictures of what it all looks like when you've decided and it's all set up, I'd love to see what you end up with.

Cheers.

Am I the only one who thinks that there should be a wireless keyboard with a proper number pad? I understand the reason for the number pad-less option, but it makes no sense to me that a wireless full keyboard isn't available for those of use who want a clean desk.

you can afford 20K in office furniture, it won't matter what the computer cost then.

in that case, buy the mac pro with dual 30inch.
that gives it the LOOK of a serious office setup.

imac looks great.. definitely not cheap. but u wanna impress, get a dual 30inch.

and yah post some pics.. sounds like u got nice handcrafted furniture.. indonesian? brazillian cherry? pics :)

Why not just hide the Mac Pro in some closet or behind a desk and route the monitor cable so that it's hidden? That way you don't have the wire clutter and you have a nice 30" monitor.

Not quite sure why you seem to think that you know about my priorities or know enough to say they are misplaced. I'm not talking about blowing the kids' college funds or sacrificing our families health just so we can have an upscale office.

If my family is in the situation where we can afford to do certain things it isn't anyone else's place to tell us how we should spend our hard-earned money. I asked how people thought certain computers looked coupled with high-end furniture, not if we should buy high-end furniture vs. spending the money in other areas.

Not that I owe a further explanation (or any explanation) but don't worry, we take plenty of nice vacations.

please excuse my comment in advance, but i totally believe that any kind

of Mac should not be treated as a piece of furniture or part of the decor!

from my business experience, those who spend their worklife in $20K-$30K

worth-of-furniture-offices (i exclude the paintings because, you know,

art is a matter of opinion!!!), do not have any kind of PC.

their secretary, who usually resides in another room, has a pc but

only the monitor is on the desk.

Note that I do not actually own either iMac or MP (my first Blackbook is finally in FedEx's grubby paws now!!!)

My vote is for the two 24" iMacs. I am assuming that you are setting up two desks for both you and your wife. I say that because obviously you want your computers to match. Aside from that, I think that the two iMac's are more easily accomodating to a non-modern, classic look (especially if modified with colorware) while the MP screams modern, even the screens. Odd's are you don't need the 30" and that the 24" will be more than enough, unless you plan do serious movie watching (which seems counterproductive especially when you don't even get Blu-Ray yet (built in at least)). Not to mention, the simplicity of iMac's design means that you will have more storage space because you won't have to hide away the MP tower. Plus there is just the general rule that it's not the best idea to hide away any kind of tower into a small wooden hole (heat issues). Not that I expect it would be a problem, but just incase, you might have some bluetooth problems if the signal is going through a lot of wood and metal (others feel free to correct me on that).

As for being able to sync up your iPhone, just keep the cable in the desk. It's only one cable so it can be kept out of sight for visitors. Then whenever you need it, just grab it for the time and then rehide it.

Remember, the last season iMac's were good enough for that movie about the designer from hell...Devil wears Prada. If you're wife needs any more convincing, show her those clips. They comp's looked excellent in that kind of setting. Granted they are no longer white, but I think that their being Aluminum makes them look better, without having the box-y lines of the Mac Displays.

Edit: Plus, I'm surprised that no one has mentioed the convenience of having your speakers hidden. That should definitely be a plus towards the iMac.
Edit 2: Also, the iMac has the built in iSight camera for easy video tele-conferencing or just calling the family.

I think the iMac looks better than the ACD screens b/c the iMac has the nice black screen border and the sides are aluminum, while the ACD sides are actually white plastic. Only the top and bottom and front and back are aluminum. I don't think that looks as nice as the iMac. But then again, one or two 30" is a nice setup.

Funny because to me Apple greatly considers home decor and aesthetics within their design especially with the iMac. Apples design's are much less industrial looking and more minimal/modern/clean which lend themselves to home decor. IMO Mac's would look odd sitting on desks or cubicles in the office. Style is a major consideration for Apple's computers, where better can you incorporate a stylish computer than in your home to complement your own style (if you have it :p ).

So my wife and I were in the Apple store yesterday and she really liked the look of the iMac. It really would look great in any office regardless of price. The 24" monitor was larger than I thought it was, but obviously isn't widescreen.

Perhaps they'll release a 30" widescreen iMac in June with Montevina (a guy can hope right) since that is when we'll probably be ready for the new computer.

Actually the iMac is widescreen.
We have guests over to the house often, and any of them that has not ever seen an iMac looks at it with their mouths open. They can't believe how beautiful the design is, clarity of the display. Then I wait and almost of all them start looking around for the beige box. When they can't find it, I see them look at me, and I just say, "that's the whole thing". That's when they really are blown away.
Get an iMac.

Mick

We're trying to decide whether to get an iMac or a Mac Pro with a 30" screen (or 2 30" screens) for the office.

There is a HUGE price difference between an iMac and a Mac Pro.

Are you only concerned with asthetics and how "cool" it looks?
If that's the case, either one will look great in your office.

I'd be more concerned with:

a) What kind of processing/RAM/storage power you may need
b) How much money you want to spend

Yeah, the screen is widescree, it just doesn't look like it because the computer hardware, namely the speakers and the ram space, full out the bottom of the screen, giving it that square like appearance.

I guess that makes sense. From a quick look you see a square so I guess the brain assumes it isn't widescreen (at least my brain did).

Still the difference between 24 and 30" is quite large.
